Call for papers: 2019 Detroit Stars Centennial Conference
The Detroit Stars were formed in 1919 as an independent black baseball club by pioneering future Hall of Fame executive Rube Foster of Chicago. The Stars played other professional black ballclubs along with black and white semipro teams. A year later, Foster founded the first major black league, the Negro National League, with the Detroit Stars as one of its eight charter members.
To honor the team’s centennial, The Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium and Wayne State University’s Department of African American Studies invite original unpublished papers for the Detroit Stars Centennial Conference on August 8-10, 2019. The event is co-sponsored by SABR’s Detroit Chapter.
Abstracts can cover all aspects of baseball, with emphasis on the Detroit Stars, black baseball, Michigan baseball, and/or baseball history. Abstracts only, not to exceed 300 words, should be submitted by June 15, 2019 to Lisa Alexander at lisa.alexander@wayne.edu. Please indicate any A/V needs you will require. Following the submission deadline, authors will be notified as quickly as possible whether their papers have been accepted. Submission of an abstract indicates the presenter’s intent to register for and attend the conference. All authors are required to register for the conference and present their work in person.
The conference registration is $125. The conference fee covers all events, including a bus tour of Detroit and tickets to a Detroit Tigers game. You can register for the conference at detroitstars.org. The conference hotel is the Delta Hotels Detroit Metro Airport and the room rate is $99 per night.
