Diamond: Bullpen Day turns into a winning formula in baseball

The Tampa Bay Rays endured boatloads of criticism when they unveiled an unorthodox pitching plan for 2018: In place of a fifth starter, they often scheduled “bullpen days,” in which a parade of relievers worked the whole game.

The move opened the Rays to skepticism, ridicule—and more nefarious allegations. They were accused of intentionally fielding a noncompetitive roster and artificially depressing their players’ future salaries, with Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zack Greinke going as far as to call it “bad for baseball.”
