Gennaro, Flinn, Hawks re-elected to SABR Board of Directors
Members of the Society for American Baseball Research have elected three incumbents to the organization’s Board of Directors in 2017.
Vince Gennaro was re-elected as SABR’s President in an unopposed race, receiving 750 of 794 first-preference votes. F.X. Flinn was re-elected as SABR’s Treasurer in an unopposed race, receiving 740 of 794 first-preference votes.
Emily Hawks was also re-elected as a SABR Director, receiving 499 of 794 first-preference votes. Paul Parker finished runner-up for a Director’s seat with 278 first-preference votes.
Gennaro was elected as SABR’s President in 2011 and re-elected in 2013 and 2015. He is the director of Columbia University’s sports management graduate program, the author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball, and the host of By the Numbers: Baseball SABR Style on SiriusXM on Sunday nights. He is also a regular contributor to MLB Network and a consultant to MLB teams. His non-baseball work is highlighted by a 20-year career at PepsiCo — including roles as Division President and GM of a billion-dollar bottling business — and ownership of a pro sports franchise. His innovative analysis of baseball has been the subject of articles in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and CNN Money. He has also written for Yahoo! Sports and The Wall Street Journal and is a frequent guest commentator on sports business topics. He serves on the Advisory Board of ANC Sports and holds an MBA from the University of Chicago. He lives in Purchase, New York, with his wife and daughter.
Flinn is the senior member of the SABR Board, first elected as Treasurer in 2001. In 1990, he started Expert Systems Development Corp, an IT consulting firm specializing in data warehousing, knowledge management and process development. After graduating from Cornell University in 1975, he worked in the trade book publishing industry for Doubleday and Bantam. In 1981 he became involved with the Rotisserie League founders and in 1984 published the first book on fantasy sports, Rotisserie League Baseball. Flinn comes from a large extended family, and while he and his wife have no children, they enjoy doting on more than a score of nieces and nephews. They live in Quechee, Vermont.
Hawks has served on the SABR Board since 2013. A SABR member since 2008, she is an Assistant Vice President in the Analytics unit of Guy Carpenter and Co., LLC. In her role, she utilizes statistical models to quantify levels of risk for her clients, usually insurance companies, and consults with them on their business growth strategies. She is also pursuing a Master’s in Computational Finance and Risk Management in the Applied Math department at the University of Washington. As an active member of the SABR Northwest Chapter, she has been a regular attendee at SABR’s National Conventions, Analytics Conference and Arizona Fall League Conference. She lives in Seattle, Washington.

The 2017 SABR elections featured online voting for the eighth consecutive year as well as traditional paper ballots. A total of 794 votes were received, constituting about 14.37 percent of the membership.
