Hall of Fame to honor scouts for the first time

They’ve been the supporting cast behind the curtain, the backup singers with anonymous names. Without them, the show wouldn’t go on.
They are baseball scouts.
They were honored at the 10th annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation banquet, founded by Chicago White Sox executive Dennis Gilbert, over the weekend in Beverly Hills. And in mid-April, will have their names in lights.
For the first time, scouts will be featured at the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., with an exhibit called “Diamond Mines,” at the entrance of the Today’s Game gallery that will open the weekend of May 3.
“The exhibit will explore and bring light to the untold and under-appreciated part of the game,” Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson said, “which is scouting. There will be artifacts from different scouts, and the centerpiece will be an interactive data base with 6,000 reports and growing. It will allow a fan to understand how a kid on a sandlot ends up on a major-league club, and in some cases, the Hall of Fame.”
