Herron: Like baseball? You’ll love SABR meetings

From SABR member Gary Herron at the Rio Rancho Observer on July 9, 2016:

What do do former big-league ballplayers John Roskos, Burt Hooton, Dave Anderson, Franklin Stubbs, Frank Viola and Pat Listach have in common?

Here’s the answer: They’re all former big-leaguers who have all been guest speakers for the Rio Grande Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research meetings in Albuquerque. So, too, was former Rio Rancho High School outfielder/pitcher Josh Walker, who was still a Baltimore Orioles farmhand when he spoke earlier this year.

On Saturday, you can add former Oriole, Dodger and Tiger outfielder John Shelby to that distinguished list. He’ll be the guest speaker for the SABR meeting at 1 p.m. at Isotopes Park. (The next meeting will be at the same time and place on Saturday, Aug. 27.)

Admission is free; all you need to do to meet Shelby, hear him speak and answer questions, plus sign autographs, is show up at the Captain’s Corner near the left-field corner.
