According to Retrosheet, “It likely is baseball’s most famous act of deception and trickery, which results in the victim being greatly embarrassed in addition to making an out. The play was more common in the early days before rules were adopted that limited what the pitcher could do to make it appear that he had the ball when he did not.”

However, as the list concludes, the hidden ball trick is far from a thing of the past.
