In Memoriam: Jerry H. Gregory

We are sad to pass along the news that Jerry Gregory, 86, who served as SABR’s Vice-President from 1980 to 1982, passed away on November 19, 2013, in Dunedin, Florida.

Gregory was one of SABR’s earliest members, joining the Society in 1972. He was an expert on the careers of umpires, broadcasters and “long-forgotten players” from the early 20th century. An avid baseball enthusiast, he was a long-suffering Cleveland Indians fan and an ardent supporter of the Alexandria Dukes/Prince William Cannons/Potomac Nationals minor league team.

His passion for baseball and the rules of the game was a philosophy of life. One of his greatest joys was visiting minor league baseball stadiums and talking baseball with local residents.

Born Sept. 11, 1927, Jerry Henry Gregory was a U.S. Navy veteran and employed by the Department of Defense at the Pentagon for most of his career. He formerly lived in Cambridge, Ohio, and Annendale, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Estelle Gregory, on January 29, 2013.

He is survived by his five children, Stephanie, Peter, Jerry, Jeffrey and Jennifer, and several grandchildren.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date at baseball fields across the nation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you support your local minor league baseball team.
