In Memoriam: Roland LeGates

We are sad to note the passing of SABR member Roland C. “Bob” LeGates III, 76, of Hopelawn, New Jersey, who died Friday, December 6, 2013, at the Princeton Medical Center, in Plainsboro, New Jersey.

He was born in Jersey City and resided in Hopelawn and Princeton for the past 21 years. Bob was a Railroad Yard Master with Penn Central, Conrail, and CSX, working in Linden, Sewaren, Metuchen, Browns Yard, and Manville for 44 years before retiring in 1999. He was a member and Local Chairman of the Yardmasters of America Union, and a member of the Society of American Baseball Research since 1984. Bob served his country in the Army as a Military Police officer while stationed in Germany.

He was predeceased by his parents, Roland Jr. and Ruth Duffy LeGates. Bob is survived by his wife, Alberta Elaine LeGates; his children Jeffrey Tarantino of Perth Amboy and Lisa Lomba of Matawan; granddaughter Kristin Podsiadlik of Marmora; brothers James R. LeGates of Green Cove Springs, FL, and William LeGates; and his aunt and uncle Hazel Inglesby of Union; and James M. LeGates of Ohio.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords. Entombment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park Mausoleum in North Brunswick.
