MAY 8, 2023 — Marcellus Savoie and Davis Hebert, eighth-grade students at Jesuit High School in New Orleans have been awarded $125 scholarships by the Schott-Pelican (Louisiana) Chapter through the SABR Local Grants program.

The Louisiana chapter received one of five SABR Local Grants in 2023 to establish a new essay contest and scholarship award at Jesuit High School. The scholarship money has been applied as a credit to the students’ school tuition accounts.

At the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, SABR chapter members Richard Cuicchi and Richard Dempsey worked with Jesuit High School officials to organize a SABR Club as an extra-curricular student activity. Cuicchi and Dempsey served as volunteer moderators for the student club, along with Jesuit faculty moderator Rob Weiss. The club meets bi-weekly throughout the school year to learn more about the game and teach the basics of research and writing about baseball topics.
