Negro Leagues Star Dink Mothell to Receive Grave Marker

From Mark Schremmer at the Topeka Capital-Journal on June 4, with mention of SABR members Larry Lester and Jeremy Krock:

Carroll Ray “Dink” Mothell’s final resting place is almost complete.

Buried in anonymity for more than 30 years, the Negro Leagues baseball star and Topeka native will receive a marker in a dedication ceremony at his Mount Hope Cemetery gravesite at 9:30 a.m. June 18.

Mothell’s case isn’t unique to Negro Leagues players, and the Society for American Baseball Research Negro Leagues committee has been working to change that. Since 2004, the committee has installed about 20 tombstones for former players and others involved with the Negro Leagues. The group was recently recognized on an ESPN “Outside the Lines” segment.

In addition to Mothell, the SABR committee this summer is dedicating graves for National Baseball Hall of Famers Frank Grant and Solomon White, as well as six players without markers in Chicago.
