New baseball collection at San Diego’s Central Library

For the hardcore baseball fan, it’s like hitting the mother lode, having a honey hole of books, newspapers and memorabilia fall into your lap.
The San Diego Ted Williams Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) announced on Thursday the William J. Weiss Collection of baseball history had been donated jointly to the chapter and the San Diego Public Library.
The collection will be on permanent display on the eighth floor in the San Diego Central Library’s Sullivan Family Baseball Research Center.
This isn’t the run-of-the-mill collection of a few autographed baseballs and signed Ted Lepcio bat.
“There are 15 tons of baseball research material in this collection,” said longtime baseball historian and SABR member Andy Strasberg. “It’s an amazing combination of quantity and quality.”
Included in the collection are score sheets from minor league games from the 1950s to the 1970s, newspapers and baseball publications like “The Sporting News” going back to 1870, record and rule books, media guides, yearbooks, programs, magazines, player questionnaires and books … both biographies and novels.
Saturday, the Ted Williams Chapter of SABR will meet at 10 a.m. in the Central Library Auditorium for a regular meeting, but also to discuss the collection. Padres TV announcer Mark Grant will be the feature speaker at the event, which is open to the public. There is free two-hour parking available under the library.
