Profile of Mel Poplack, chair of Seymour-Mills Chapter

Naples resident Mel Poplock thought he knew a lot about baseball until one day in West Palm Beach.

He developed a fascination with baseball statistics, which evolved into a facility with numbers that led to him becoming a CPA.

 But then came that trip to West Palm Beach more than 10 years ago and his first Society for American Baseball Research convention.

“I was so impressed,” Poplock said. “I thought I knew a lot about baseball. These guys know everything.”

Poplock was hooked. He’s now chairman of the Seymour-Mills Chapter of the Society for America Baseball Research, popularly referred to as SABR by the cognoscenti. It’s one of 62 SABR chapters but the only one on Florida’s west coast.
