Rosecrans: Making Gus proud: Reds manager David Bell adds to family’s rich baseball legacy

David Bell jumped into a rental car with his dad, Buddy, and made the four-hour trip from Detroit to Cincinnati in three hours.
David was 22 years old and had watched the first four big-league games of his career from the bench. His grandfather, Gus Bell, was in the hospital, having suffered a heart attack.
Now the Reds manager, David Bell can’t remember a time when he didn’t believe he’d be a big-league player. His dad, an All-Star himself, wasn’t sure. His grandfather was.
“I already knew I wanted to do it at 3 or 4, but as I got older, he ignited the love of the game for me,” David said. “He was the most positive person in my life, extremely positive.”
More than that, he was his best friend.
