Rosecrans/Sarris: How Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson engineered the rotation’s historic turnaround

After the cameras stopped rolling at manager David Bell’s introductory news conference in October, owner Bob Castellini uttered the words that would become a meme among some Reds fans: the team would “get the pitching.”

To most, it meant the reckless throwing of dollars at free agents, wheeling and dealing and importing an entirely new staff to replace what had been, over the past couple of years, one of the worst pitching staffs in MLB history.

But it was a move on Halloween that might have really set the team’s plan in motion. That day, it became official, the Reds had brought on pitching coach Derek Johnson, who agreed to leave the Milwaukee Brewers to join Bell’s new staff in Cincinnati.
