SABR 52: Trivia Contest to feature new themes, Immaculate Feud competition

SABR 52 convention logoJULY 15, 2024 — At SABR 52 this summer in Minnesota, the Trivia Contest is anything but trivial!

This year’s Trivia Contest will include new themes, new rules, and a brand-new format: an “Immaculate Feud” competition based on the popular Immaculate Grid game produced by Baseball-Reference.com. All attendees at SABR 52 are invited to participate in this year’s Trivia Contest and test their baseball brains against their friends and fellow SABR members.

Hosted by five-time SABR trivia champion Dan Massey, the team and individual events will focus on a wide range of baseball questions, including Hall of Famers, award winners, and statistical achievements, plus the Negro Leagues, minor leagues, managers, umpires, baseball in music, literature and pop culture, uniform numbers, draft history, and more.

In the individual semifinals as well as the team and individual final rounds, a Jeopardy!-style format will be utilized, and questions will be formatted in a way that encourages quick thinking and problem solving abilities to complement all-around baseball knowledge. Some examples of categories may include uniform number math, baseball spelling bee, and Hall of Fame haikus. This year, we’ll also introduce a “Final Jeopardy!” question in both the team and individual finals to culminate the competition. In this last challenge of the competition, players will have the opportunity to wager points on their knowledge of a particular topic.

A new competition for 2024 will be a Family Feud-style game called “Immaculate Feud.” Teams of exactly five players will have an opportunity to test themselves on the most common answers to Baseball-Reference.com’s Immaculate Grid game. For example, players with a 30-HR season for the Giants could be a topic. Although some individuals like to play Immaculate Grid with a focus on achieving as rare an answer as possible, Immaculate Feud will be based on contestants trying to determine the most popular answers. The preliminary round will be a written test, whereas the finals will be a live performance between the two highest-scoring teams similar to TV’s Family Feud.

The Trivia Contest preliminary tests are open to all SABR 52 attendees and will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 8 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Minneapolis. Just show up with your thinking cap on and follow the instructions! Teams can be formed in advance or on-site, so new attendees and solo participants are encouraged to join the fun.
