SABR Cleveland chapter to commemorate 1948 World Series champions, team Hall of Fame inductee
SABR’s Jack Graney Chapter in Cleveland invites all baseball fans to join us for a special event commemorating the 1948 World Series champions from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the Carl Stokes wing of the main branch of the Cleveland Public Library (525 Superior Ave.), prior to the Guardians’ Hall of Fame inductions and game that evening against the Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field.
The event is co-hosted by the Jack Graney Chapter, the Cleveland Public Library, and the Cleveland Guardians.
Doors will open at 12:30 p.m., with the event kicking off at 1:00 p.m. Featured speakers will include Luke Epplin, author of Our Team, a 2021 book about the 1948 Indians, who won 97 games in the regular season, defeated the Red Sox in a tiebreaker at Fenway Park, and then beat the Boston Braves in six games to win the World Series.
Other featured speakers will be SABR members Ike Brooks, who will talk about the historic seasons by Black baseball pioneers Larry Doby and Satchel Paige, Cleveland State professor emeritus David Goldberg, who will talk about life in Cleveland during the late 1940s, and Steve Dittmore, who will talk about Dale Mitchell, an outfielder on the team.
Mitchell will be inducted into the team Hall of Fame in a ceremony prior to the game that evening, and his family members are expected at the meeting, which will conclude around 4:00 p.m., giving plenty of time for fans to attend and then go to the game nearby.
There will also be a display of memorabilia from that team, as well as a viewing of the highlight film of the 1948 World Series. The event is free and open to the public.
