Murphy was the face of the franchise for the Atlanta Braves in the 1980s, winning two National League MVP awards in 1982 and ’83, earning five Rawlings Gold Glove Awards in center field (after making his major-league debut in 1976 as a catcher) and making seven All-Star appearances. He finished his 18-year career, which also included stints with the Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies, with 398 home runs and more than 2,000 hits. His jersey number 3 was retired by the Braves in 1994 and he remains actively involved in baseball as a beloved ambassador with Atlanta fans today.

The SABR Oral History Collection includes more than 800 interviews conducted with ballplayers (Major Leagues, Minor Leagues, Negro Leagues, AAGBBL), executives, scouts, authors, writers, broadcasters, and other figures of historical baseball significance. Learn more at SABR.org/oralhistory.
