SABR member Joseph Puccio named collections service officer at Library of Congress

Joseph A. Puccio, head of the Acquisitions Fiscal and Support Office at the Library of Congress, has been named collections development officer in Library Services.
In the newly established position, Puccio will plan, develop, coordinate and execute Library-wide policies and programs related to the development and selection of library materials, which encompass holdings in all formats and in all languages. He will not only be responsible for building the collections, but will also work to maintain the strength and comprehensiveness of the collections. His role will be critical to the Library’s role in support of Congress, the research community and the American public.
The Collections Development Office, which existed at the Library from 1978 to 1995, has been reinstated by Associate Librarian for Library Services Roberta I. Shaffer.
Shaffer said, “The reinstatement of the Collections Development Office and officer comes at a critical time for the Library’s collection direction. We are challenged to identify and acquire new forms and formats of research materials, to meet our clienteles’ expectations about how they will interact with materials, and indeed, how materials on seemingly diverse subject matters will relate to each other. Our collection policies must be nimble and flexible, yet continue to reflect our long-term view of our collections and their utility to the creation and preservation of knowledge.

Puccio first arrived at the Library in 1983, as a member of the 1983-1984 Library of Congress intern class. After completing the internship program, Puccio was assigned to the Serial and Government Publications Division, where he worked from 1984 to 1989. During this period, he authored two publications, “Serials Reference Work” and “Computer Periodicals Currently Received in the Library of Congress.” Through the years, Puccio has held a series of positions related to the management and development of the Library’s collections. He has worked in the Collections Management Division, in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division and in the Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate (ABA). In 2008, he was appointed head of ABA’s Acquisitions Fiscal and Support Office. In 2010 and 2011, he assisted the associate librarian for Library Services in planning the establishment of a Collections Development Office.
Puccio is a graduate of the University of South Florida, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications in 1977 and a graduate degree in library science in 1983.
