Schmidt: SABR member Justine Siegal to manage two games in pro ball

From Danny Schmidt at the Marin Independent Journal on June 27, 2016, on SABR member Justine Siegal:

In 1991, a 16-year-old Justine Siegal told her high school baseball coach she planned to coach at the collegiate level one day.

“He laughed at me and said a man would never listen to a woman on a baseball field,” she said. “I’ve never seen him again, but I bet he’d be really proud of me if he knew.

“Sometimes people aren’t against an idea, they just never thought about it before. That makes a big difference to recognize.”

Siegal, 41, won’t have trouble commanding the attention from the San Rafael Pacifics. The Los Angeles resident will manage the independent minor-league baseball team for two historic games this week, Wednesday and Thursday night, against the Sonoma Stompers at Albert Park. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.

“Women are oftentimes discouraged from playing baseball at a young age,” Pacifics president and general manager Mike Shapiro said, “and we hope that these two games will help young women and girls to pursue their baseball dreams.”
