A baseball tournament held at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds in September 1867 helped spark the area’s love affair for the sport, according to Tom Shieber, senior curator at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
“It’s success marked an important beginning, and that beginning was the beginning of the love affair that this town has had for now 150 years with the great national game of baseball,” Mr. Shieber said.
The Quad-Cities’ place in baseball history was the theme for the 14th Annual Henry Farnam Dinner on Thursday night, where Mr. Shieber was the featured speaker.
The dinner, sponsored by River Action and the Dispatch•Argus•QCOnline, was held Thursday night at the Rogalski Center on the campus of St. Ambrose University, 518 W. Locust St.
