Suttell: Indians’ Perez, Naquin among AL’s elite with the glove

The Indians, after games of Tuesday night, July 16, had pulled to within 5 games of the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins. While All-Stars Francisco Lindor, Carlos Santana and Brad Hand have done a lot of the heavy lifting in bringing the team back into contention, contributions now are coming from all over the roster — none more important, perhaps, than catcher Roberto Perez.

Some new defensive ratings for the first half of the 2019 season, released by the Society for American Baseball Research, underscore Perez’s value to the Tribe.

The SABR Defensive Index draws on and aggregates two types of existing defensive metrics: those derived from batted ball location-based data and those collected from play-by-play accounts.
