Casey Stengel Advertisement for Skippy Peanut Butter
Description
A Color slide of an advertisement for Skippy Peanut Butter with dual black-and-white photographs of Casey Stengel. The photographs show Stengel from the shoulders up. On the left, he is looking at the camera with wide eyes. On the right, he has his head slightly dipped to his left and is smiling with an open mouth. The photograph also has a hand holding a cracker with peanut butter on top. It is meant to be Stengel's hand, but it is uncertain if it is his. He is wearing a New York Yankees home uniform. The top of the advertisement reads, "A paid testimonial from Casey Stengel for Skippy peanut butter". There is a color illustration of a jar of Skippy peanut butter at the bottom of the advertisement and a caption that reads, "If you like peanuts, you'll like Skippy" The caption under the two photographs reads, "Actually, it's fairly simple to get famous personalities to say something about your product in an ad. ALL YOU NEED IS MONEY. We went right up to Casey Stengle and handed him some money and a jar of Skippy Peanut Butter. Then we asked him to say something pleasant about Skippy. "Let me say at the offset," said Casey, "That's the way I feel and for another thing the whole business of peanut butter is not built on a firm foundation. Or in other words it's just as I said. You see? Peanut butter is for kinds." Well, we weren't going to take no for an answer. So we coaxed Mr. Stengel into trying some Skippy (Here's how we coaxed him - more money.) "Needless to say," he said, "And I'll take a stand on that any time or to whoever should make any kind of stand like that. Skippy is not just for kinds. It's great. It tastes just like peanuts." We'll just add that we're in agreement with Mr. Stengel. Skippy Peanut Butter is made on purpose for grownups by an exclusive patented process. It's always easy to digest, easy to spread, and it stays fresh. And, of course, Skippy gives you the true flavor of the U.S. Grade No. 1 peanuts it's made from."
