Clemens, Baumann, Petriello, Carleton win 2023 SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards
Congratulations to Ben Clemens, Michael Baumann, Mike Petriello, and Russell Carleton, winners of the 2023 SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards. They were recognized in an awards ceremony during the SABR Analytics Conference on Saturday, March 11, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Clemens was voted as the winner of the Contemporary Baseball Analysis Award for his article “How Good Are Those Probabilities on the Apple TV+ Broadcasts?”, published by FanGraphs on May 26, 2022. Clemens is a staff writer at FanGraphs whose work has also appeared at Viva El Birdos. He lives in San Francisco, California.
Baumann was voted as the winner of the Contemporary Baseball Commentary Award for his article “The Playoffs Aren’t Too Big. The League Is Way Too Small,” published by FanGraphs on October 4, 2022. Baumann is a staff writer at FanGraphs whose work has also appeared at The Ringer, Grantland, and Baseball Prospectus.
Petriello was voted as the winner of the Historical Baseball Analysis/Commentary Award for his article “How many games would Springfield’s ringers win?”, published by MLB.com on February 19, 2022. Petriello is a Stats Analyst for Major League Baseball and host of the Statcast podcast who can regularly be seen on MLB Network and across all MLB platforms.
Carleton was voted as the winner of the John Dewan Defensive Analytics Award for his article “So You’ve Decided to Ban the Shift,” published by Baseball Prospectus on March 9, 2022. Carleton has been writing for Baseball Prospectus since 2009 and has been a consultant to several major-league teams. He is the author of The New Ballgame: The Not-So-Hidden Forces Shaping Modern Baseball, due out in June 2023.
The SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards recognize baseball researchers who have completed the best work of original analysis or commentary during the preceding calendar year.

Voting for the winners was conducted online from February 1-10, 2023, at SABR.org, BaseballProspectus.com, FanGraphs.com, and IBWAA.com, with results weighted equally at 25%.
