DECEMBER 9, 2024 — Dave Parker and Dick Allen, two prodigious sluggers and former MVP Award winners, earned election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday via the Classic Baseball Era Committee.

Parker and Allen were candidates on the Classic Baseball Era Committee Ballot, which was considered by a 16-member committee — including SABR members Larry Lester, Leslie Heaphy, Steve Hirdt, and Bob Elliott — that held meetings in Dallas, Texas. The eight-person ballot was comprised of candidates whose primary contributions to the game came from before 1980.

Parker was named on 14 of 16 ballots and Allen on 13 of 16 as the only finalists to reach the 75-percent threshold necessary for election.

Parker, 78, was a two-time batting champion, a three-time Gold Glove Award winner, and the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1978 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1979, he won All-Star Game MVP honors — highlighted by two jaw-dropping assists from right field — and helped lead the Pirates to a World Series championship. He won another World Series with the Oakland Athletics in 1989, recording 339 home runs during his 19-year career from 1973 to 1991. Click here to read Parker’s biography at the SABR BioProject.

Allen, who died in 2020, played 15 seasons from 1963 to 1977, recording 351 homers and 1,119 RBIs. He earned National League Rookie of the Year in 1964 with the Philadelphia Phillies and he was voted as the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 1972 with the Chicago White Sox. Parker and Allen will be joined in the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 by any electees who emerge from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America voting, which will be announced on January 21.
