Students, apply now for a SABR Negro Leagues Committee scholarship in 2018

SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee will award $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors in its 10th annual Thomas R. Garrett Scholarship essay contest in 2018. Students must write a 1,200-word essay answering a question related to one of the Negro League figures who are the namesakes of the scholarships.

The Jimmie Crutchfield Memorial Scholarship will honor one high school senior with a $1,000 prize and give out one $500 award for special recognition. The deadline to apply is May 4, 2018.

Eligible applicants must be 1) a current high school senior, 2) anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application, 3) planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution, and 4) carrying a minimum 2.5 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.

Please mail or email: 1) completed application, 2) a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator, 3) lists of high school & community activities, and 4) the 1,200 word essay. All applications must be postmarked no later than April 16, 2018 and mailed to Dr. Leslie Heaphy (Lheaphy@kent.edu), Kent State University at Stark Campus, 6000 Frank Rd., North Canton, OH 44720.

Each year, the SABR Negro Leagues Committee targets monies to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and a nationwide art contest.
