Weaver: An oral history of the Rangers’ triple play, one of the strangest you’ll ever see
From Levi Weaver at The Athletic on August 17, 2018:
We’re nearly 350 words into this story and haven’t even talked about the craziest part of the game. In the fourth inning, the Rangers turned a triple play, the likes of which hasn’t been seen since 1912.
With the bases loaded, Jurado was pitching to David Fletcher. Fletcher smashed a hard short-hopper to Jurickson Profar, who made a clean pick, stepped on the bag, tagged Taylor Ward, and threw to Rougned Odor, covering second base, to complete the triple play. Odor then chased Kole Calhoun most of the way back to second, and the third out wasn’t signaled until Calhoun left the base path. It happened so quickly that even after the game, there was some confusion as to what actually happened.
Here to talk you through it chronologically: the players.
