Houston/Larry Dierker Chapter meeting recap – 3/17/2014

34 loyal members of the Larry Dierker Chapter attended our St. Patrick’s Day SABR session on Monday night at the Westin Hotel in downtown Houston, where we welcomed new member Roger Selin and visitor Fred Arnold.

Bill Brown provided an excellent report on the Houston Astros and team expectations for 2014 followed by an extremely interesting commentary by Greg Lucas on his new baseball book to be published this summer including the search for a publisher and content.

We then had a lively discussion on how to improve the pace of baseball games, with Tal Smith offering a variety of solutions to make the game more interesting to the fans.

Bob Dorrill updated the group on SABR 44 and provided the names of additional speakers who have now committed to the convention. He also announced that the book “Houston Baseball – The Early Years”” is being printed for distribution late in April and the Houston Babies will play a Vintage Baseball doubleheader at the George Ranch this coming Saturday.

Bob asked for volunteers to speak at our next meeting on April 14, and five members came forward. The trivia contest, prepared by Bob Stevens, was won by Tom White, with Mike McCluskey coming in second.

See you all on April 14th.
