Learn more about recipients of SABR Local Grants in 2024

MARCH 14, 2024 — SABR is pleased to announce the recipients of Local Grants in 2024:

  • Baltimore Babe Ruth Chapter (Baltimore, MD)
    Aberdeen Municipal Ballpark Commemorative Marker/Plaque
    Helping to purchase and place a historic marker at the former site of Aberdeen Municipal Ballpark in Aberdeen, South Dakota. There are currently no SABR markers in the state of South Dakota.
  • Field of Dreams Chapter (Dubuque, IA)
    Dubuque Baseball Classic symposium
    Funding a two-day baseball symposium to complement the Dubuque Museum of Art’s 2024 exhibitions “Picturing America’s Pastime” presented by the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The chapter hopes to make it an annual event.
  • Ken Keltner Badger State Chapter (Milwaukee, WI)
    Dave Bancroft Cemetery Acknowledgement
    Placing a small in-ground granite marker next to Hall of Famer Dave Bancroft’s plot at Greenwood Cemetery in Superior, Wisconsin.
  • Larry Dierker Chapter (Houston, TX)
    Texas Historical Marker for Colt Stadium
    Helping to purchase and place a historic marker next to NRG Center, the site of right field at Colt Stadium, home of the Houston Colt .45s from 1962 to 1964.
  • Schott-Pelican Chapter (New Orleans, LA)
    George Washington University Capstone Research Analytics Project
    Funding three student SABR memberships and a one-year subscription to FanGraphs to help sponsor a capstone research project titled “The Effect of the Pitch Time Rule on Pitcher Injuries.”
  • Scouts Research Committee
    Weiss Questionnaire Machine Learning
    Hiring two research assistants to focus on data management and cleaning of the Bill Weiss Baseball Player Questionnaires, a collection of self-completed surveys of professional baseball players from 1945-2005, which will soon be made available at SABR.org.

The SABR Local Grants program provides an opportunity for chapters, research committees, and chartered communities to apply for funding for their projects under SABR’s Four Pillars: Research, Scholarship, Preservation, and Future of the Game. In total, more than $10,000 in SABR Local Grants will be awarded in 2024.
