Barron: Baseball history buffs descend on Houston for SABR 44

Even within the congregation of seamheads known as the Society for American Baseball Research, which holds its 44th annual convention this week in Houston, not every member calculates WAR, VORP or Pythagorean expectation figures for their favorite teams or players.

The 700 members who will meet this week at the Royal Sonesta are less inclined toward contemplating WAR (the statistic known as wins above replacement that has become a popular method of grading players) than the impact of war itself, as in how baseball interest among Japanese-Americans was affected by World War II internment camps.
