“Knuckleball!” documentary to be screened at SABR 42

Attendees at SABR 42 this summer will have a chance to see a special screening of the “Knuckleball!” documentary film by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

The film will be shown with an introduction by Alan Nathan, chair emeritus of SABR’s Science and Baseball Research Committee and an authority on baseball’s most unpredictable pitch. Nathan, who was interviewed for the film, will talk about the knuckleball and hold a Q&A session afterward. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 at the Marriott City Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Registration information and a detailed schedule for SABR’s 42nd national convention can be found at SABR.org/convention. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. The convention will be held June 27-July 1, 2012. Minnesota Twins president Dave St. Peter and general manager Terry Ryan highlight our list of speakers and panelists; more speakers and events will be announced soon.

“Knuckleball!” follows the only knuckleballers in the major leagues in 2011, Tim Wakefield and R.A. Dickey. It also features former knuckleballers Phil Niekro, Charlie Hough, Wilbur Wood, Jim Bouton and Tom Candiotti. Other interviews include writers Ben McGrath, Roger Angell and Tony Massarotti; catchers Jason Varitek, Doug Mirabelli and Josh Thole, as well as Derek Jeter, Terry Francona, Joe Torre, Carlos Beltran and Buck Showalter.
