Wednesday, July 6
- 6 a.m.: SABR Board of Directors meeting begins, Investment I room.
- 2 p.m.: Registration desk opens.
- 4 p.m.: The Film Festival begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday and will run through Sunday, Atlantic Room. (Details can be found here.)
- 4 p.m.: Committee chairs meeting, Catalina Room.
- 5 p.m.: Regional chapter leaders meeting, Catalina Room.
- 7 p.m.: Medical Panel, moderated by Will Carroll of SI.com. Panelists include: Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Dodgers team physician; Dr. Kevin Wilk, Associate Clinical Director for Champion Sports Medicine; and Ned Bergert, former Angels head trainer.
- 8 p.m.: First-Time Attendees’ Reception, Catalina Room.
Thursday, July 7
- 8 a.m.: Registration desk opens.
- 8:30 a.m.: Annual business meeting with keynote speaker MLB player agent Scott Boras, held in the ballroom.
- 8:45 a.m.: Film Festival resumes in the Atlantic Room.
- 11 a.m.: Committee meetings (Pictorial History, Deadball, Latino Baseball, Black Sox Scandal).
- 12:30 p.m.: Research presentations Nos. 1-4. See presentation abstracts and presenter bios here.
- 1:30 p.m.: Media Panel: “Where we’re going to be getting our baseball information a decade from now”, moderated by SABR President Andy McCue. Panelists include: Dave Cameron, Managing Editor of FanGraphs.com, one of the most dynamic websites for analysis, statistical and otherwise, of contemporary baseball; Sean Forman, Founder and Guru of Baseball-Reference.com, the premier site for baseball statistics, and a SABR member; Bill Squadron, head of Bloomberg Sports, developing real-time analytic tools for the fan; and Russ Stanton, Editor of the Los Angeles Times, a mainstream publication that’s moving aggressively into putting its content on the web. Held in the ballroom.
- 1:30 p.m.: One-man show, Rockne Skybyrg as Ernie Lombardi, Pacific Room.
- 2:30 p.m.: Research presentations Nos. 5-12. See presentation abstracts and presenter bios here.
- 4:30 p.m.: Committee meetings (Minor Leagues, Baseball and the Arts, Oral History, Negro Leagues, Origins, Collegiate Baseball, Games and Simulations).
- 7 p.m.: FanGraphs Live event (separate admission; $10 discount for SABR members who register at the SABR store). Held in the ballroom.
- 8 p.m.: Trivia Contest preliminaries/semifinals, held in the Catalina Room.
Friday, July 8
- 8 a.m.: Committee meetings (Bibliography, Baseball Records, BioProject).
- 8:30 a.m.: Registration desk opens.
- 9 a.m.: Panel: “The Evolution of Baseball Over SABR’s Four Decades”. A panel honoring SABR’s 40th anniversary will look at the changes that have taken place in the game over those decades, moderated by Tom Hufford, one of SABR’s 16 founding members who currently sits on the organization’s Board of Directors. Panelists include: John Thorn, MLB’s Official Historian and author of Baseball in the Garden of Eden; John Dewan, a founder of STATS, Inc., and Baseball Info Solutions, and author of the influential The Fielding Bible; Roland Hemond, an executive for five decades, three-time winner of MLB’s Executive of the Year Award, former general manager of the White Sox and Orioles, and 2011 recipient of the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award; Wes Parker, former Dodgers player and the team’s Player Representative when SABR was founded; Dennis Gilbert, former player agent, benefactor of scouts and minor league player. Held in the ballroom.
- 9 a.m.: Film Festival resumes in the Atlantic Room.
- 10 a.m.: Research presentations Nos. 13-20. See presentation abstracts and bios here.
- 12 p.m.: Awards Luncheon (featured speaker: Dennis Gilbert). Held in the ballroom.
- 3 p.m.: Committee meetings (Women in Baseball, Nineteenth Century).
- 4 p.m.: Start loading buses for ballgame. Note: Chits for all ballgames (Dodgers, Angels, Lake Elsinore) must be redeemed at the registration desk by 2:59 p.m. Friday.
- 7:10 p.m.: Dodgers vs. Padres, Dodger Stadium. Seats are available on the Field level in Section 50 (right field) or the Reserve level in Section 43 (left field). Click here for a seating diagram of the ballpark. Note: The buses will be staying after the game for the fireworks exhibit at Dodger Stadium.
Saturday, July 9
- 8 a.m.: Bus tour of historical Southern California ballpark sites, including Wrigley Field, the Los Angeles Coliseum, Gilmore Field, Washington Park and the Vernon ballpark. For complete details about the tour, click here.
- 8:30 a.m.: Donor breakfast in the ballroom.
- 9 a.m.: Film Festival resumes in the Atlantic Room. Registration desk opens.
- 9:30 a.m.: Research presentations Nos. 21-30. See presentation abstracts and bios here.
- 12 p.m.: Committee meetings (Business of Baseball, Statistical Analysis, Umpires and Rules, Scouts, Ballparks, Biographical Research, Retrosheet).
- 1 p.m.: Poster presenters available to answer questions.
- 3 p.m.: GMs Panel: “The Changing Role of the General Manager”, moderated by SABR member and SB Nation baseball editor Rob Neyer. Panelists include: Jed Hoyer, general manager of the San Diego Padres; Fred Claire, former Dodgers general manager from 1987-98; Dan Evans, former Dodgers general manager from 2001–04 and now a consultant to the industry. Held in the ballroom.
- 4 p.m.: Start loading buses for ballgame. Note: Chits for all ballgames (Dodgers, Angels, Lake Elsinore) must be redeemed at the registration desk by 2:59 p.m. Friday.
- 6:05 p.m.: Angels vs. Mariners, Angel Stadium. Seats are available at three different prices, on the field level in Sections 101-102 (left field) and at two locations in the upper deck in Sections 413-416 (between home and third) or Sections 507-509 (left field). Click here for a seating diagram of the ballpark. Note: The buses will not be staying for the postgame concert featuring Dierks Bently. If you wish to stay for this concert, you will need to make alternative transportation arrangements.
- 10 p.m.: Trivia Contest finals, held in the ballroom. Note: Trivia finals will begin shortly after all the buses arrive back from the Angels game.
Sunday, July 10
- 9 a.m.: SABR Board of Directors meeting begins, Investment I room.
- 9 a.m.: Film Festival resumes in the Atlantic Room. (It will run until 5 p.m.)
- 9 a.m.: Committee meetings. Please see the bulletin board in the hotel’s 2nd Floor General Area for details.
- 10:30 a.m.: Encore presentation for winner of the Doug Pappas Award.
- 11:30 a.m.: Player Panel. A Player Panel will follow the SABR awards presentations on Sunday morning. Expected panelists include: Del Crandall, who was born in Ontario, California, and attended high school in nearby Fullerton. Crandall debuted for the Braves in 1949 and played for 16 years, hitting 179 home runs. Crandall was key to the Braves’ success as National League champions in 1957 and 1958; Tommy Davis, who led the National League in batting average in both 1962 and 1963. In 1962, he also led the league in hits (230) and RBI (153). Davis batted .313 in the postseason, including the 1963 and 1966 World Series. His career included 18 seasons and 1,999 games; and Al Ferrara, a classical pianist who played at Carnegie Hall by age 16, a World Series champion baseball player with the Dodgers by 23, and an actor sharing screen time with Tallulah Bankhead and Zsa Zsa Gabor on a top-rated television series before he turned 30.
