Sean Forman honored with 2020 SABR Analytics Conference Lifetime Achievement Award
Sports Reference LLC president Sean Forman was honored with the SABR Analytics Conference Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday, March 14, 2020, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Forman launched Baseball-Reference.com, now baseball’s premier statistical website, in 2000. Forman recognized a need for an easy-to-use comprehensive baseball player database and almost single-handedly created and engineered what has become the best site to look up almost any statistic for any baseball player or team.
Over the past two decades, he has refined the site to go well beyond the standard statistics found in baseball encyclopedias to transform the way researchers can access once mostly inaccessible information such as single game data, splits based on that data, minor league statistics, leader boards for all categories in which a player qualified, and a history of the player’s transactions. For any serious baseball researcher, analyst, sportswriter, announcer, or historian, Forman’s creation is the first stop. He has also expanded the scope of the Sports Reference websites to include football and basketball (pro and college), hockey, international soccer, and the Olympics. Prior to launching Baseball-Reference, Forman co-founded BaseballThinkFactory.org, a website devoted to modern sabermetric analysis and discussion.
