This optional tour will be led by Drexel University history professor Scott Gabriel Knowles. We’ll take you through the Old City and cover “300 years in three hours.” The tour will be one-of-a-kind because it will be only SABR members and their families. This is an event you don’t want to miss. No fee. We’ll meet at 1 o’clock at Welcome Park, on the east side of 2nd Street between Chestnut and Walnut, just blocks from the convention hotel. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the weather will likely be hot and steamy.

Ross Adell, a SABR member for almost 25 years before he died of cancer in 2006 at the tender age of 50, loved a good party. He enjoyed making new friends and introducing them to kindred baseball spirits. That’s what the SABR convention is all about. Women in Baseball: A Diverse Perspective
Women have played our national pastime as children and adults probably as long as their male counterparts. The development of softball has largely obscured the rich history and current involvement of women in the hardball world. This discussion will bring into focus the role of women in baseball, past and present, through the real life, and varied experiences of our panel members. Speakers include Perry Barber, a professional umpire for more than three decades; Kristin Mills Caldwell, a three-time member of the U.S. National Women’s Baseball Team; Susan Ingersoll Papaneri, Director of Baseball Administration, Philadelphia Phillies; and Sarah Sands Ferguson, an alumnus of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Moderator: Robin Wallace, a National Women’s Baseball Hall of Famer.

“The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg” special film extras
We are pleased to host a special screening of never-before-seen film extras from The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg at SABR 43 in Philadelphia with filmmaker Aviva Kempner and SABR member John Rosengren, who has just published a new biography on the Hall of Fame slugger. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg special edition gives a lively history of the golden age of baseball. From the early days of Hank Greenberg to his days in the front office, the special edition DVD provides viewers with a humorous and historical account of baseball in its purest days. The film extras include more interviews with Bob Feller, Hal Newhouser, Harry Eisenstat, and more. The crown jewel of the added footage is a never-before-heard interview with Ted Williams.

The novelist is Eric Rolfe Greenberg, author of The Celebrant; the fantasy player and Original Rotisserian is ESPN’s Steve Wulf; the board-game expert is Dr. Mark W. Awards presented or announced at the luncheon include the Lee Allen Award, the Roland Hemond Award, the SABR Baseball Research Awards, the McFarland-SABR Baseball Research Awards, and the Henry Chadwick Awards. The Awards portion of the luncheon concludes with the awarding of the Bob Davids Award, SABR’s highest honor.
Keynote speaker: Larry Bowa, who has spent 40 years in Major League Baseball as a player, manager, coach and analyst. Bowa played 12 seasons with the Phillies (1970-1981), winning two Gold Glove awards and appearing in five All-Star Games. He led the National League in fielding percentage six times and was a key member of the Phillies’ 1980 World Series championship team. He finished his playing career with the Cubs (1982-1985) and Mets (1985), having scored 987 runs and stolen 318 bases. He went on to manage the Padres (1987-1988) and Phillies (2001-2004), winning the 2001 Manager of the Year Award. Bowa also coached for the Angels (1997-99), Mariners (2000), Yankees (2006-07) and Dodgers (2007-10.) He also served as bench coach for Team USA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

This discussion will touch on the many highlights, teams, baseball venues and personalities that have made Philadelphia one of baseball’s most historically rich cities from 1830s town ball up through today’s modern version of the game. Panelists include Dr. Jerry Casway, author of Ed Delahanty in the Emerald Age of Baseball; Richard Hershberger, author of numerous articles on early baseball; David Jordan, president/chairman of the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society; Norman Macht, author of an award-winning three-volume biography of Connie Mack; Rich Westcott, author of a dozen books on Philadelphia baseball history; and moderator John Thorn, Official Historian of Major League Baseball.

SABR Run
Join SABR members for some early-morning exercise on a 1-hour walk or run. All fitness levels welcome. Meet in the lobby.
It is completely voluntary. Here’s a suggested route: Exit out to Filbert Street and turn left on Filbert. Go out Filbert and pass City Hall to 15th Street. Cross 15th and enter Love Park with the big sculpture sign. Proceed through Love Park (there are steps) to the corner of 16th & Arch Streets. The Parkway is in front of you. Go out the Parkway along the north side from 16th and go to the Art Museum at 25th Street. Go up the steps and “Do a Rocky”. Return the same way. It’s about 3 miles and takes about a half-hour — but you can stretch it to an hour if you go in back of the Museum and go for another mile along the Kelly Drive section of the Schuylkill Banks Trail. Arrive back just in time for the Donor’s Breakfast.

Statistical Analysis Panel
The use of statistical analysis in baseball continues to grow. In the area of player evaluation, MLB teams are working to blend statistical analysis with scouting, in order to develop better insights into player selection, evaluation and even in-game decisions. This panel will discuss the evolution of statistical analysis, from the early days to the use of contemporary analytics, which draw on the recent proliferation of data and advances in technology. Panelists include: Steve Mann, an early sabermetrics pioneer who was hired by the Houston Astros in 1988; Dick Cramer, a sabermetrics pioneer and co-founder of the SABR Statistical Analysis Committee; and Bill Petti; a staff writer at FanGraphs and regular correspondent on MLB Network’s “Clubhouse Confidential. The panel will be moderated by Vince Gennaro, SABR President and author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball.

Vintage Base Ball Game: Athletic BBC vs. Mechanicsburg Nine
A game with rules from the 1860s will be played at 12th and Wharton Streets in South Philadelphia. SABR members Dennis Link and Jeff Watson will be playing for the Athletic Club. The Route 23 bus from the Marriott at 12th and Market travels south on 12th Street and will get you to the game in about 12 minutes. The return trip goes north on 11th Street. The game can also be reached by using the Broad Street Subway and walking. See the Transportation Tips page at SABR.org for details. Be sure to come to the game hungry. Three blocks east of the game, at 9th and Wharton, is the cheesesteak capital of the world. At that corner are two of Philadelphia’s best cheesesteak shops, Pat’s and Geno’s. Baseball and the Arts Variety Show
SABR 43 Co-Chair Seamus Kearney will emcee and participate in the first-ever baseball-themed variety show at a SABR convention on Saturday night. SABR members will perform comedic skits, play baseball songs and present a comedy routine. Baseball and the Arts Committee Chair Joanne Hulbert and others will give us her rendition of a “Saturday Night Live” News Update. Professional comedian Jerry Kahn will present an original comedy routine poking fun at the National Pastime. Professional musician Erik Balkey of the Copper Ponies will conclude the show with a few of his original baseball-related songs.

Trivia Contest Finals
We steadfastly maintain that there is nothing trivial about baseball trivia. Come watch SABR’s best as they try to answer questions that are presented in ascending difficulty. The early-round questions will be at a relatively easy starting point, while the late-round questions, though more difficult, will still interest casual fans. Who will win the SABR 43 Trivia Contest?
