Dallas Baptist’s Nate Humphreys named 2025 Collegiate Baseball Player of Year by SABR Dallas-Fort Worth chapter
DALLAS – Dallas Baptist University’s Nate Humphreys has been chosen as the recipient of the 32nd Howard Green SABR Metroplex Collegiate Player of the Year Award, while Trent McCown of the University of Texas at Dallas was selected as the 14th annual SABR Metroplex Carroll Beringer Award College Division Players of the Yea by SABR’s Ernie Banks-Bobby Bragan DFW Chapter.
The prestigious college baseball awards honor the memory of Green, the local SABR chapter’s longtime president, and Beringer, a former major-league pitching coach who was a great supporter of college baseball in the area. The DFW Chapter served as the host of SABR’s 2025 annual convention.
Humphreys is the record 17th honoree from Dallas Baptist since these awards originated in 1993 and led the Patriots to a school-record 11th consecutive NCAA Regional berth in 2025.
The 6-2, 207-pound senior outfielder from Midlothian, Texas, signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies after completing his eligibility and already has made an impression with Clearwater of the Florida State League at mid-summer.
Collegiately, the 2025 second team All-America choice by the American Baseball Coaches Association and ABCA first team All-Central Region honoree earned consensus first team All-Conference USA as a senior. Known for his exceptional defense, Humphreys was a two-time Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year as one of the nation’s elite center fielders.
Also in 2025, Humphreys led CUSA in slugging percentage (.679) and his 69 RBIs were the second-most in the league. He ranked third in CUSA in hits (79) and runs (68), fourth in home runs (17), fifth in batting average (.353), sixth in doubles (18), and eighth in stolen bases (21) for coach Dan Heefner’s team.
During his four seasons at DBU, Humphreys became a mainstay in the Patriots’ lineup. He finished his career with the third-most games played (225) and fifth-most starts (211) in program history. His name appears in the DBU record book across 10 additional career categories, including: No. 2 in stolen bases (58) and stolen base attempts (68), No. 3 in walks (122), No. 6 in home runs (39) and runs scored (180), No. 7 in at-bats (781), No. 8 in RBI (163) and total bases (400), No. 9 in doubles (49), and No. 10 in hits (226). Humphreys is the son of former Texas Tech All-Southwest Conference outfielder Mike Humphreys.
McCown, a 6-0, 185-pound outfielder-first baseman from Wylie, Texas, via Carrollton Hebron High School, paced the transitioning NCAA Division III independent power to a record of 32-6 overall under head coach Shane Shewmake. He started and played in every game while leading the Comets with a .418 batting average (51-for-122) with 52 runs scored, 12 doubles, 13 home runs, 45 RBIs, 38 walks, and three stolen bases.
McCown also broke the school season record with a .836 slugging percentage and had a .574 on-base percentage. His defense in right field and at first base helped UTD sport a .959 fielding percentage as he committed just one error in 98 chances for a personal .990 standard. He managed 14 multiple-hit games and tied the school record with eight runs batted in while going 4-for-5 with a double and home run against Macalester on March 22.
He smashed a pair of homers runs and scored four times with six RBIs against the University of Dallas on February 8 as well and tied another school record with six intentional walks in 2025.
McCown drew three walks in four different games and was named American Southwest Conference Hitter of the Week on February 10 and to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week on February 19. The 2025-26 UTD Male Student-Athlete of the Year also starred at Grayson and Odessa Colleges prior to joining the Comets, who were not eligible for NCAA postseason activity in 2025 because of the transition season from Division III to Division II and the Lone Star Conference in 2025-26.
These two superlative talents join an elite list of previous SABR Howard Green and Carroll Beringer award winners such as Scott Malone and Luken Baker of TCU, Hunter Pence and Michael Choice of UT Arlington, Darick Hall, Collin Poche and Drew Holder of DBU, Elvin Rodriguez of Northwood, Conner and Casey Combs of East Texas Baptist, and the only other two-time recipients of either award – ETBU’s Sayers Collins and A.J. Liu of UT Dallas.
“This selection process seems to become more difficult every year because of the wealth of college talent and success of college baseball in the Metroplex,” said Banks-Bragan SABR Chapter President Paul Rogers. “The two recipients this season had great seasons on the diamond and have distinguished themselves as great teammates and players involved in the community.”
