SABR Research Collection celebrates Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023

Scott Rolen and Fred McGriff

On Sunday, July 23, the Baseball Hall of Fame welcomes two new members: Scott Rolen and Fred McGriff. SABR celebrates Cooperstown’s Class of 2023 by highlighting Research Collection articles featuring the new inductees.

SABR’s BioProject provides comprehensive biographies of both new inductees. Author Tim Odzer tells the story of the decorated third baseman Rolen, who earned eight Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and seven All-Star selections, helping the St. Louis Cardinals win two NL pennants and the 2006 World Series. Peter M. Gordon explores the Crime Dog’s journey to Cooperstown as the first player to hit 30 or more home runs in a season for five different clubs.

SABR’s Games Project also includes stories that shine a light on players inducted in the Class of 2023. McGriff’s exploits during the Atlanta Braves’ 1990s dynasty are well chronicled. Rolen’s key home run in Game 7 to help the Cardinals clinch the 2004 NL Championship Series is also told here.

In addition, former Brooklyn Dodgers great Carl Erskine will be honored in Cooperstown with the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award. Click here to read Erskine’s SABR biography, by Bob Hurte.
