SABR 45: Hotel room block, Cubs Upper Deck Box tickets almost sold out

Once they sell out, tickets will no longer be available in that section when you register online. However, tickets are still available in our Terrace Reserved-Outfield block ($38) until Friday, May 15. This game is expected to sell out and our ticket block is only available on a first-come, first-serve basis. SABR 45: Early registration, all-inclusive discounts close on May 15

Early registration for the SABR 45 convention, June 24-28, 2015, at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, is now available at SABR.org/convention. Just a reminder that our ticket block for the Cubs-Dodgers game on Thursday, June 25 at Wrigley Field is limited and the game is expected to sell out. Game tickets in the SABR block will not be available after early registration ends on May 15 and will not be sold on-site during the convention.

  • The Baseball Project concert: On Thursday evening, June 25, SABR 45 attendees will have a special opportunity to see The Baseball Project in concert in the Grand Ballroom at the Palmer House Hilton. Advance presale tickets are available for $25 members/$40 non-members when you register for SABR 45 before May 15, 2015. SABR 45: Donate to SABR and go on the field at Wrigley

We are excited to announce a special SABR donation package that will be offered for SABR 45 in Chicago.

Thanks to the generosity of the Chicago Cubs, anyone who makes a donation of $1,500 or more to the SABR General Fund between May 1 and June 15, 2015, will have the opportunity to go on the field before or after the Cubs-Dodgers game on Thursday, June 25 during SABR 45.

This special opportunity is only available to eight SABR donors — four people before the game and four after the game. Donors will be able to go on to the field and take photographs during batting practice before the game or walk the field and take photographs after the game. Each one-time donation is good for one on-field ticket. Choice of before/after the game is first-come, first-serve (please contact Marc Appleman to express preference.)

In addition to the on-field opportunity at Wrigley Field, the SABR 45 donation package also includes four tickets to the SABR 45 Baseball Project concert at the Palmer House Hilton, two tickets to the SABR 45 Donors Breakfast, a special SABR 45 glass commemorative baseball, and a one-year membership to SABR.

SABR 45: Committee meetings

Several research committees have scheduled guest speakers for their annual meeting at this year’s convention, highlighted by an appearance from Masanori Murakami, the first Japanese player in major-league history, at the Asian Baseball Research Committee meeting at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 27. The Black Sox Scandal Research Committee will have Peter Alter, Chicago History Museum archivist, for its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 26. In addition, the Negro Leagues committee and Women in Baseball committee will have guest speakers from their featured panels earlier in the day.

SABR 45: Get your tickets now for a special concert with The Baseball Project

Attendees at the SABR 45 convention this summer in Chicago will have a special opportunity to see The Baseball Project in concert on Thursday, June 25, 2015, in the Grand Ballroom at the Palmer House Hilton.

Formed in 2007 by Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows, The Minus 5, R.E.M.) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3, Gutterball), The Baseball Project began as a way for a couple of fans to pay musical tribute to our national pastime. But The Baseball Project has since blossomed into a full-fledged, much-loved band in its own right, one which includes drummer Linda Pitmon (Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3, Zuzu’s Petals), and Peter Buck and Mike Mills, founding members of R.E.M., one of the best-selling alternative rock bands of all time.

New address for SABR office

Continuing to expand on its relationship with Arizona State University over the past four years, SABR has moved its office to downtown Phoenix and will now be housed at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. 

Since moving to Phoenix, SABR has worked with ASU on a number of developing projects. The SABR office has welcomed fall and spring semester interns from the Cronkite School and, in 2013, the state-of-the-art media complex hosted sessions during the second annual SABR Analytics Conference.

This 2015 edition offers numerous items not contained in the original 2005 publication — full biographies of all of the coaches, the broadcast team, and owner Tom Yawkey — 10 new biographies.

That makes a total of 19 new items — 10 bios, six game accounts, and three other items — in this edition. ’75 remains a unique treasure for anyone who remembers Carlton Fisk waving his arms in the October night.

The 18th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference will be held August 6-8, 2015, at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The conference is open to all baseball, history and sports fans of all ages.

The 2015 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference will celebrate the rich history of black baseball in Pittsburgh. We welcome proposals for oral and poster presentations from all research fields. Previous presenters have included college faculty, public school teachers, graduate students, and independent scholars. Presentations may focus on any topic related to the theme, “Baseball’s Best: the Grays and the Crawfords,” or other Negro Leagues issues. Some possibilities include: Josh Gibson, Pittsburgh Crawfords, Gus Greenlee, Cum Posey, Vic Harris, Cool Papa Bell, the Crawford Grill, and many others.

Wesley Barrow, New Orleans Negro Leagues legend, honored with new grave marker

A small but hardy group of city officials, former players, and media members huddled around the freshly painted grave of New Orleans Negro Leagues legend Wesley Barrow on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Gretna, Louisiana, to honor a man who managed, mentored and influenced hundreds, if not thousands, of New Orleans-area youth.

Clutching wind-blown umbrellas and standing in puddles, the group held a brief ceremony dedicating a new grave marker for Barrow’s burial spot, which had been unmarked for nearly half a century, since the man known as “the Skipper” died on Christmas Eve in 1965.

A community effort led by Gretna City Councilman Milton Crosby, who played for Barrow on the Black Pelicans, and local journalist and researcher Ryan Whirty strove to raise money to purchase and place the new marker at Barrow’s grave. Both were in attendance at the event Saturday.

Also attending the ceremony was Rodney Page, the son of former Negro Leagues promoter and owner Allen Page. Rodney Page donated several hundred dollars toward purchasing the burial marker, and at the event Saturday he spoke of his own memories of playing for Barrow as a youth.

SABR member Lewis Pollis wins third annual Greg Spira Baseball Research Award

SABR member Lewis Pollis has been selected winner of the third annual Greg Spira Baseball Research Award. His winning entry not only grabbed the $1,000 first prize, it helped him graduate.

“If You Build It: Rethinking the Market for Major League Baseball Front Office Personnel,” published at SABR.org, was his senior honors thesis in economics at Brown University, from which he graduated in 2014. Pollis used transaction data and random effects modeling to estimate the variation in player-investing skill at the general manager level.

Pollis has written for numerous publications, including ESPN Insider, Baseball Prospectus, Beyond the Box Score, Wahoo’s on First, and served as a baseball analytics intern for the Cleveland Indians and a baseball operations intern for the Cincinnati Reds. Pollis was the recipient of the Yoseloff Scholarship to attend the SABR Analytics Conference in 2013 and won a SABR Analytics Conference Research Award that year for Contemporary Commentary for his Beyond the Box Score piece entitled, “Did Hall of Fame’s Founders Want Voters to Judge with Their Eyes?”

Cee Angi’s profile of Vin Scully, “We’ve Been Friends Long Enough, You’ll Understand,” took the $200 second prize. The piece appeared as a Longform feature at SB Nation, where she is a featured baseball contributor. Her work has also appeared at Deadspin, The Classical, CBS Chicago, Baseball Prospectus, and The Platoon Advantage, among other sites.

SABR member Rob Arthur’s “Analytic Value of the Crack of the Bat” won the $100 third prize. It appeared on Baseball Prospectus. The article compared sounds made by the crack of the bat—harder hits producing higher frequencies. He is a contributor at FiveThirtyEight.

Given in recognition of the best published article, paper, or book containing original baseball research by a person 30 years old or younger, the winners were announced on April 27, which would have been Greg Spira’s 46th birthday.

Bios on more than just ballplayers: The ambitious goal of the SABR Baseball Biography Project is to publish a full-life biography of every major league player in history. But SABR members write about a lot more than just ballplayers. Baseball SABR Style focuses on examining and interpreting the statistical analysis that plays a critical role in baseball today.
