8.5″ x 11″, 224 pages
The stadium on Coliseum Way in Oakland has been known by many names over the years, but it has always been “The Coliseum” to the fans of the Oakland A’s. Opened in 1968, it served as the home of the Athletics until 2024. The Green and Gold won hearts and championships on the spacious field with its abundant foul territory. Four World Series championships were celebrated there, as well as numerous postseason games, perfect games, and no-hitters. Hall of Famers, including A’s players Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers, and Rickey Henderson, played on that field.
It was also the home to generations of fans, who embraced the blue-collar atmosphere of the Oakland A’s and spent many happy hours tailgating in the parking lot, watching fireworks from the field, and cheering on their team through thick and thin. The Coliseum gave rise to characters such as Krazy George (creator of the Wave), Banjo Man, the Last Dive Bar crew, and the Right Field Drummers.
Home twice to the Oakland Raiders, the Coliseum has also hosted other sports, including soccer and cricket. Numerous concerts, including Bill Graham’s legendary Day on the Green concerts, filled the park with crowds and music. Join us as we share stories of games and good times at this concrete cathedral in this new SABR Digital Library book. Enjoy the memories and the echoes of “Celebration” that linger still.
