2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners announced

For the fourth consecutive season, the SABR Defensive Index™ was used to help select the winners of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award and Rawlings Platinum Glove Award™, presented by SABR. The SABR Defensive Index accounts for approximately 25 percent of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process that was added to the votes from the managers and coaches.

The 2016 Gold Glove winners were announced on ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” on Tuesday, November 8. Click here to view the winners.

The final SABR Defensive Index rankings for the 2016 season were also released this week. Click here to view the final SDI rankings.

Voting for the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award, presented by SABR, was conducted online at Rawlings.com this week and the winner will be announced tonight at the Rawlings Gold Glove Award Ceremony in New York.

The SDI is compiled by the SABR Defensive Committee, which includes SABR President Vince Gennaro, Sean Forman of Baseball-Reference.com, Ben Jedlovec of Baseball Info Solutions, SABR Director F.X. Flinn, author and defensive metrics expert Chris Dial, and author Michael Humphreys.

2016 SABR Arizona Fall League Experience highlights and photos

The eighth annual SABR Arizona Fall League Experience was held Thursday, November 3 to Saturday, November 5, 2016. The event featured three AFL games at three different ballparks — one fewer than usual, thanks to a rare Arizona storm that postponed our opening game — including the Fall Stars Game showcasing baseball’s top prospects.

On Friday, November 4, attendees were treated to a ballpark dinner at Scottsdale Stadium along with the Arizona Major League Alumni auction. AFL president Steve Cobb spoke about the history of the fall league, AFL alumnus Mike Piazza’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the attendance boost this year because of the presence of football star Tim Tebow. Former Chicago Cubs outfielder Byron Browne talked about some interesting events from his career, including Sandy Koufax’s perfect game in 1965, being involved in the historic Curt Flood trade, and being roommates with Lou Brock, Billy Williams, and other greats.

On Saturday, November 5, about 35 attendees and members of SABR’s Flame Delhi Chapter gathered for the chapter’s regional fall meeting. Our guest speakers included a panel on baseball broadcasting with Oakland A’s voice Vince Cotroneo, his son Dominic Cotroneo of Arizona State University, and Marty Lurie of KNBR in San Francisco, moderated by Tony DeMarco. Denise Stillman spoke about plans to develop land near the “Field of Dreams” movie site in Dyersville, Iowa, while Chuck Johnson gave a presentation on the Arizona Rookie League. Former scout Bernie Pleskoff gave his recommendations on who to watch in the Fall Stars Game. MLB.com columnist Barry Bloom and former MLB pitcher John D’Acquisto talked about the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series and shared stories from John’s new autobiography, Fastball John. After lunch, the conference concluded with the Fall Stars Game on Saturday evening at Surprise Stadium.

Early registration now open for 2017 SABR Analytics Conference

Early registration is now open for the sixth annual SABR Analytics Conference on March 9-11, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. We hope you’ll join us next spring in Arizona, where we’ll bring together the top minds in the baseball analytics community to discuss, debate and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball. All baseball fans are welcome to attend.

SABR has a long and storied history with baseball statistical analysis, evidenced by the link between our name and sabermetrics. SABR’s long history in this area of baseball research, coupled with our mission of advancing the understanding and knowledge of baseball, makes us the perfect choice to coordinate and host this ground-breaking event.

The Analytics Conference schedule consists of a combination of Guest Speakers, Panels, and Research Presentations — plus the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition, in which undergraduate, graduate and law school students from across the country analyze and present a real baseball operations decision.

For more information on the 2017 SABR Analytics Conference, visit SABR.org/analytics.

Deadline extended for research presentation submissions for 2017 SABR Analytics Conference

SABR and Baseball Info Solutions are excited to announce the call for presentations for the sixth annual SABR Analytics Conference. Abstracts of proposed research presentations should be no more than 500 words in length, and must include the abstract’s title, review of previous work on the subject, a summary of the research methodology and anticipated results, and the expected contribution to the field of baseball analytics offered by this work. Submissions are open to the general public, with student presenters considered in a separate track.

Please send all abstracts to this e-mail address: 2017-analytics-presentations@sabr.org. The submission deadline for 2017 SABR Analytics Conference presentation abstracts has been extended to 11:59 p.m. MST, Wednesday, November 23, 2016. Note: If your presentation abstract is selected as a semi-finalist, you will be required to register for the conference in order to be eligible for a presentation slot.

Students: Apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend 2017 SABR Analytics Conference

With generous funding from The Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school and college students who wish to attend the 2017 SABR Analytics Conference. This scholarship will pay for registration, air transportation and lodging up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Jeff Schatzki at jschatzki@sabr.org no later than December 31, 2016.

The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage student engagement with baseball analytics, and to engender an active interest in baseball research and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend SABR’s Analytics Conference and to introduce them to fellow SABR members and professionals within the baseball community. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

Click here to learn more or to download the 2017 Yoseloff Scholarship application.

Register now for the 2017 Diamond Dollars Case Competition at SABR Analytics

The SABR Analytics Conference is pleased to host the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Click here for more details.

In the Diamond Dollars Case Competition, undergraduate, graduate and professional school students from colleges and universities across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season. The cases are developed by SABR President Vince Gennaro, author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball, and consultant to MLB teams. The Diamond Dollars Case Competition is the first national competition to be based solely on baseball operations issues.

Four- to five-person student teams are asked to evaluate a baseball operations case problem. The student team presents their analysis and recommendations to a panel of judges that includes MLB front office executives. More than a dozen alumni from the first five Diamond Dollars Case Competitions have secured internships or permanent positions within Major League Baseball.

For more information on the 2017 Diamond Dollars Case Competition, please contact SABR President Vince Gennaro or click here for rules and entry requirements.

Nine new biographies were posted this week as part of the SABR Baseball Biography Project, which brings us to a total of 3,926 published biographies. Here are the new bios published this week:

All new biographies can be found here: http://sabr.org/bioproj/recent

Ideally, we would like to have the bios written, edited, and fact-checked by the end of 2016 so we can post them on the BioProject website and on social media before the election announcements. 1986 Mets biographies now posted online

In SABR’s The 1986 New York Mets: There Was More Than Game Six, edited by Leslie Heaphy and Bill Nowlin and published by SABR in 2016, we paid tribute to a historic team whose World Series championship remains a touchstone for generations of Mets fans.

The 1986 New York Mets includes biographies of every player, coach, broadcaster, and other important figures in baseball’s top organization that year — from stars like Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Gary Carter, and Keith Hernandez to manager Davey Johnson to iconic voices like Ralph Kiner and Tim McCarver.

This book on the 1986 season re-tells the story of that year’s classic World Series between the Mets and the Boston Red Sox. After four games, each team had won two away games and neither had won at home. Then the Red Sox won Game Five at Fenway, and were one game away from winning their first world championship in 86 years. It came to the point they were one pitch away from baseball Nirvana. And then …

Just about everyone knows what happened, but there are takes on it here you might not have read elsewhere. Mostly, this is the story of each of the players, coaches, managers, and broadcasters, their lives in baseball, and the way the 1986 season fit into their lives.

The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in The 1986 New York Mets can now be read online at: http://sabr.org/category/completed-book-projects/1986-new-york-mets

You can also purchase the book or download the e-book — along with its companion volume on the 1986 Boston Red Sox — by clicking here. SABR members can download all SABR Digital Library e-books for free at SABR.org/ebooks.
