Ross Adell First-Time Attendee Coffee Talk
Ross Adell, a SABR member for almost 25 years before he died of cancer in 2006 at the age of 50, loved a good party. He enjoyed making new friends and introducing them to kindred baseball spirits. That’s what the SABR convention is all about. For those of you attending your first convention, we know it can be a bit daunting. But we want you to feel welcome and Ross would, too. Grab a cup of coffee while meeting fellow SABR members and convention attendees. From 7:30 a.m.-8:00 a.m., we will also discuss tips on navigating convention, especially useful for first-time attendees. Coffee talks are open to all SABR 52 attendees.

St. Paul Saints vs. Columbus Clippers, 7:05 p.m.

Join us for a minor league game between the St. Paul Saints and Columbus Clippers (Cleveland Guardians’ Triple-A affiliate) at CHS Field in St. Paul. Your SABR game ticket also includes roundtrip bus transportation from the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis hotel and pregame admission to the City of Baseball Museum. Cost: $30 (includes bus).

  • Please note: The buses will begin loading at 5:30 p.m. on the NW corner of Grant Street and Nicollet Mall. Exit the hotel front door, turn right, and walk a half-block to Grant Street to find the SABR buses. Postgame bus pickup will be outside the center field gate. Make sure to bring your bus chit and game ticket with you!

Target Field ballpark tour

Join us for a behind-the-scenes 90-minute ballpark tour of Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Minnesota baseball and vibrant atmosphere of this award-winning ballpark with a private tour that allows guests to experience the ballpark while learning about the history of Target Field and the Minnesota Twins. Cost: $20.

The ballpark tours will meet at Gate 29 near the Target Plaza entrance. No large bags or backpacks allowed. Water bottles are acceptable, but no other food or drink is allowed inside. Remember to bring your SABR 52 ballpark tour chit for entrance to the ballpark! All tours will leave the plaza beginning at 6:15 p.m.

  • Walking directions: Target Field is a 0.8-mile walk from the Hyatt Regency hotel (approximately 20 minutes). Exit the hotel’s front door and turn left on Nicollet Mall. Walk north for five blocks and turn left on 8th Street. Walk west for four blocks (past the colorful Prince mural and parking garage) and continue straight on 9th Street for one block. At the corner, turn left on 7th Street. Go west one block on 7th Street to find the plaza entrance to Target Field.
  • Public transit directions: Exit the hotel’s front door. Walk across the crosswalk directly in front of the hotel to the Metro Transit bus stop. Catch any Metro Transit bus heading north on Nicollet Mall. Tell the driver that you will be riding only within the free Downtown Zone. Go 3 stops to get off at 7th Street (at the Mary Tyler Moore statue.) From there, turn left on 7th Street and walk five blocks west (past the Target Center arena) to find the plaza entrance at Target Field.

On Friday evening, SABR convention attendees will have the opportunity to visit Target Field for a game between the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians. SABR has reserved a block of tickets in the Diamond Box and Field Box levels in the left field corner (sections 124-127). Chits for your ballgame ticket must be redeemed at the SABR registration desk on the 4th Floor by 11:00 a.m. Friday.

SABR’s Baseball Cards Committee, Baseball and the Arts Committee, and Latino Baseball Committee will co-host a special film screening of The Diamond King, a new biopic on legendary baseball artist Dick Perez’s career. Dick Perez, the 2024 SABR Jefferson Burdick Award winner, is known for his Donruss Diamond King illustrations and Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcards. Closing Ceremonies with Trivia Contest Finals
Join us for SABR’s Closing Ceremonies! Awards to be presented at the Closing Ceremonies are the Bob Davids Award, Doug Pappas Award, and the annual chapter awards. Then settle in to watch SABR’s trivia experts as they try to answer questions that are presented in ascending difficulty. The early-round questions will be at a relatively easy starting point, while the late-round questions, though more difficult, will still interest casual fans. Who will win the SABR 52 Trivia Contest? Minnesota Town Ball Game
On Sunday, August 11, attendees have the opportunity to watch a game of Minnesota town ball in Cologne, which is hosting the Region 7C qualifying tournament at Fritz Field. The Minnesota Baseball Association’s state-wide amateur tournament, held each summer since 1924, is a uniquely Minnesota tradition. Attendees will leave the Hyatt Regency hotel at 9:45 a.m. and return to the hotel by approximately 3:15 p.m. Total cost for the game ticket and roundtrip transportation from the Hyatt Regency hotel will likely be around $30 to $40 per person.
