Students: Last day to apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship for SABR 47 in New York City

SABR Digital Library: The SABR Book of Umpires and Umpiring

Make the right call and add this new baseball book from the SABR Digital Library to your collection:

The SABR Book on Umpires and Umpiring
Edited by Larry R. Gerlach and Bill Nowlin
Associate editors: Dennis Bingham and Len Levin
ISBN (paperback): 978-1-943816-45-3, $21.95
ISBN (e-book): 978-1-943816-44-6, $9.99
8.5 x 11″, 484 pages

This nearly 500-page book on umpires and umpiring is the collaborative work of 34 members of the Society for American Baseball Research. It is, in effect, a companion book to another SABR title, Can He Play? A Look at Baseball Scouts and their Profession, edited by Jim Sandoval and Bill Nowlin.

The SABR Book on Umpires and Umpiring includes biographies of all the umpires in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, other notable arbiters, essays about professional female umpires, umpiring in the Negro Leagues, explorations of the baseball rules, umpire equipment, and much more.

During the course of working on The SABR Book of Umpires and Umpiring, interviews were conducted with 56 major league umpires currently serving, former umpires, supervisors and those involved in umpire administration, and others whose jobs cause them to interact with umpires. It is our hope that we have helped shed light on the umpiring profession past and present, the work involved on the field, and the arduous challenges and sacrifices it takes over a large number of years to become an umpire at the top of the profession. We have tried to look at the occupation of umpiring from many different angles. No one book can cover all facets of the job, but we hope this book had touched on enough to help give readers a fuller appreciation of the game of baseball and those charged with the integrity of the game.

Contributors include: David W. Anderson, Mark Armour, Perry Barber, John Behrend, Dennis Bingham, Alan Cohen, Reynaldo Cruz, Kevin Cuddihy, Reid Duffy, Rob Edelman, Eric Frost, Larry Gerlach, Dennis Goodman, Leslie Heaphy, Harold V. Higham, Joanne Hulbert, Bob Hurte, Gil Imber, Chuck Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Stephen Johnson III, Bob LeMoine, Len Levin, Hank Levy, Bob Luke, Shaun McCready, Clark G. “Red” Merchant, Brian Mills, Bill Nowlin, Albert Piacente, Bill Pruden, David Vincent, Bob Webster, Chris Williams, and Herb Wilson.

SABR Rogers Hornsby Chapter wraps up fifth season of Alzheimer’s program

SABR’s Rogers Hornsby Chapter in Austin, Texas, wrapped up a fun and successful fifth season of its Alzheimer’s reminiscence program — BasebALZ — with an outing to Dell Diamond on Monday, April 11.

The completion of Season Five (which ran from January through April) marks two years that the Hornsby SABR chapter has been delivering the baseball-themed Alzheimer’s program in Austin. Eleven participants and caregivers enjoyed talkin’ baseball, music, TV … and yes, in Texas, even some football.

Plans are already under way for Season Six to begin in May 2017 at the Alzheimer’s Texas offices in Austin.

In addition to the program in Austin, SABR volunteers are delivering the program at the Kerrville Veteran’s Administration hospital on a monthly basis. Program leader Jim Kenton is also working with the Alzheimer’s Association, the U.S. Army at Ft. Sam Houston, and the VA in San Antonio to start programs in the Alamo City.

For more information on BasebALZ, or to learn more about how your local SABR chapter can participate, click here.

SABR’s The Baseball Index relaunched at baseballindex.org

The Baseball Index (TBI) is an ongoing project of the Society for American Baseball Research to catalog the entirety of baseball literature, from the earliest references to the present day. The index is designed to help baseball researchers find materials that advance their work.

Due to a server failure in the fall of 2015, the old TBI website crashed permanently and the search functionality had to be rebuilt. The new site is now available for all baseball researchers to use at baseballindex.org.

You can use TBI to find bibliographic data (citations) for more than 250,000 books, articles, song sheets, yearbooks, advertisements, films, cartoons, poems, media guides, cartoons, and more. See the Frequently Asked Questions for tips on how to use the new baseballindex.org site, viewing and exporting your search results, and getting the most out of the TBI database.

Vin Scully is retired; so which legendary broadcasters should you listen to now?

Chuck Hildebrandt, chair of the SABR Baseball and the Media Committee, writes:

Unless you are old enough to have been alive during World War II, you are now living in a brave new world: a world in which you no longer have the option to flip the dial and listen to Vin Scully calling a baseball game.

It’s not controversial to declare that Vin is widely considered to have been the greatest baseball broadcaster in history, and will probably continue to be regarded as such perhaps for the rest of all of our lives. But even so, that certainly does not mean that there are no baseball broadcasters still working the mikes who must also be considered among the greatest in history, and who are still available for you to listen to just about any given Spring or Summer day.

Armour, Levitt update, expand landmark study on Baseball Demographics, 1947-2016

As we approach Jackie Robinson Day tomorrow, SABR members Mark Armour and Dan Levitt have updated and expanded their landmark study on player demographics in Major League Baseball since 1947.

This project is a continuation of the authors’ efforts to numerically define the spread of integration in the years after Jackie Robinson made his major-league debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. This research was originally presented at the 2007 SABR convention in St. Louis and in the Fall 2007 Baseball Research Journal, and then updated in 2012 at the SABR BioProject.

In recent years there has been increased attention on the obvious decline of African Americans in the major leagues. The downward trend is present at all positions, although the overall decline has been exacerbated by the increased share of roster spots being allocated to pitchers and catchers. During this same period, the share of both Asians and Latinos has increased markedly, keeping the major leagues as diverse as it has ever been.

Before this study was published, accurate data on baseball demographics back to 1947 was not in a place that was easy to find. The updated article also takes a look at the effects of roster construction, player value, and other factors in the integration of baseball.

Click here to read the updated article, “Baseball Demographics, 1947-2016,” at the SABR BioProject.
