This Week in SABR: July 8, 2016

Welcome to “This Week in SABR!” Click here to view this week’s newsletter on the web. Here’s what we’ve been up to as of July 8, 2016:

2016 SABR Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference under way in Kansas City

The 19th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference kicked off this week in Kansas City, where we’re celebrating “Barnstorming in the Negro Baseball Leagues.”

Barnstorming has always been a central part of the life of Negro League ballplayers. All Negro Leaguers took part in barnstorming games across the country and in cities like Kansas City. Monarchs great Satchel Paige, whose 110th birthday is being celebrated during this conference, did his fair share of barnstorming. The conference is open to all baseball, history and sports fans of all ages.

Single-day registration for Saturday is still available on-site at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel at the Convention Center (6100 College Boulevard, Overland Park, KS 66211) at $85 for SABR members, $105 non-members. You can also purchase tickets to the Awards Dinner on Saturday ($65). Kansas City Royals game tickets and Negro Leagues Museum tour tickets are now sold out.

Visit SABR.org/malloy for information on the 2016 Call for Papers, Essay Contest, Art Contest, and Library Grant Program.

Want to throw out the first pitch at SABR 46? There’s only two spots left, so sign up today!

Thanks to the generosity of the Miami Marlins, anyone who makes a donation of $1,000 or more to the SABR General Fund will have the opportunity to go on the field for batting practice before the Marlins game vs. the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, July 29 at Marlins Park.

SABR Digital Library: From the Braves to the Brewers: Great Games and Exciting History at Milwaukee’s County Stadium

The newest publication from the SABR Digital Library focuses on memorable moments from the heart of the Badger State:

From the Braves to the Brewers: Great Games and Exciting History at Milwaukee’s County Stadium
Edited by Gregory H. Wolf
Associate editors: James Forr, Len Levin, Bill Nowlin
ISBN (ebook): 978-1-9438-1622-4, $9.99
ISBN (paperback): 978-1-9438-1623-1, $19.95

This book rekindles memories of Milwaukee’s County Stadium through detailed summaries of 72 games played there, and insightful feature essays about the history of the ballpark. The process to select games was agonizing, yet deliberate. The book could have easily been filled with memorable games by just Hank Aaron or Warren Spahn.

About half of the games are dedicated to the Braves; the other half to the Brewers. Some of the summaries chronicle games that were memorable and historic when they occurred, such as Jim Wilson tossing the first no-hitter in County Stadium in 1954, the 1955 All-Star Game, the World Series contests of 1957, 1958, and 1982, and Robin Yount collecting his 3,000th hit in 1992. Other summaries recall great performances long forgotten, such as Bob Buhl’s 14-inning complete-game victory in 1953 and the Brewers’ two grand slams in one inning in an 18-1 rout of the Boston Red Sox in 1980.

The games highlight the accomplishments and heroics of not just readily recognizable stars, like Aaron, Spahn, Eddie Mathews, Cecil Cooper, Paul Molitor, and Yount, but also revive memories of players like Gene Conley, Del Crandall, and Wade Blasingame of the Braves and Bob Coluccio, Dale Sveum, and Steve Woodard of the Brewers. Also included are great performances by the Braves’ and Brewers’ opponents, like Willie Mays’ four homers in 1961 and Nolan Ryan’s 300th victory in 1990. Twelve feature essays round out the volume and provide context for the stadium’s history. Topics include the stadium’s construction, the Braves’ move to and departure from Milwaukee, the Chicago White Sox’ home games at County Stadium, the Seattle Pilots’ relocation to Milwaukee, and the stadium’s demolition.

Members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) researched and wrote all of the essays in this volume. These uncompensated volunteers are united by their shared interest in baseball history and resolute commitment to preserving its history. Without their unwavering dedication this volume would not have been possible.

Contributors include: Alan Cohen, Bill Nowlin, Bob Buege, Brian P. Wood, Chip Greene, Dan Fields, Dennis D. Degenhardt, Dennis Van Langen, Doug Welch, Frederick C. Bush, Greg Erion, Gregg Hoffmann, Gregory H. Wolf, J.G. Preston, Jeff Findley, Joe Schuster, Joel Rippel, John Bauer, John Bauer, Joseph Wancho, Lee Kluck, Mark Miller, Mark Pestana, Mark S. 1972-74 Oakland A’s biographies now posted online

In SABR’s Mustaches and Mayhem: Charlie O’s Three Time Champions: The Oakland Athletics: 1972-74, edited by Chip Greene and published in 2015, we examined the only one not named the New York Yankees to ever win three consecutive World Series.

The 1972-74 Oakland Athletics were led by such superstars as future Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, and Rollie Fingers in the final years before free agency and the movement of players from one team to another forever changed the game. Mustaches and Mayhem includes their stories, along with biographies of enigmatic owner Charlie Finley (and his mule!), managers Alvin Dark and Dick Williams, and stalwarts Joe Rudi, Bert Campaneris, Gene Tenace, and Sal Bando.

The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in Mustaches and Mayhem can now be read online at: http://sabr.org/category/completed-book-projects/1972-74-oakland-athletics.

Retrosheet announces Summer 2016 updates

Our friends at Retrosheet have announced their Summer 2016 update:

Many updates and additions have been made to event files at Retrosheet.org, along with updated game logs and transaction data. The major inputters to the event files have been David Vincent, Cliff Blau, Mark Pankin, Gary Frownfelter, Howard Johnson, Bob Kapla, and Dick Cramer.

The Most Wanted list on our website has been updated to reflect our progress. The discrepancy files for 1956-1972 have undergone thorough proofing and they are now on the website. The most significant additions to older seasons are the deduced files for 1945 and the box score files for 1912. The bulk of deductions have been completed by Tom Thress, Jim Wohlenhaus, John Gabcik and Bill McMahon. As usual, Tom Ruane provided the leadership for the proofing of the box score files project. Other contributors (a partial list to be sure) were Dave Lamoureaux, Mike Grahek, Herm Krabbenhoft, Jonathan Frankel (AL strikeout and base on balls) and Charles Seager, who provided a lot of RBI for 1914.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers who contribute so much of their time to keep us moving forward!

— David W. Smith

Research Committee news

Here are the new SABR research committee updates this week:

  • Official Scoring: As part of the Official Scoring Committee and Oral History Committee’s joint project, click here to listen to an audio file or click here to read a transcript of an Oral History interview with Bob Rosenberg, who has been the official scorer in Chicago for seven different sports over the last six decades. He was interviewed by SABR member Bob Wood on June 28. Rosenberg has scored over 2,600 major league baseball games and all but 2 of the Chicago Bulls’ games. He shares many of his stories and memories in this half-hour interview, that includes the Andy Hawkins no-hitter, disco demolition night and many more.
  • Oral History: Jim Gates, Library Director at the Baseball Hall of Fame, has asked members of the Oral History Committee for volunteers to transcribe interviews in its recorded media archive. Since the transcriptions will ultimately be posted online to accompany the interviews, the Hall places great importance on accurate transcriptions done by people with a knowledge of baseball history. Transcribers will have their names appear on the transcripts they prepare, which will be posted on the Hall of Fame’s website. To learn more, contact John McMurray at sabroralhistorycommittee@gmail.com.
