4,000 Hit Club updates: Robinson Canó, Vinicio García
On Saturday, September 13, Robinson Canó stepped into the batter’s box at Estadio Panamericano de Béisbol in Sapopan, Mexico. Now 42 years old and more than three years removed from his last game in Major League Baseball, Canó singled for the 4,000th hit of his professional career. His Mexican League team, the Diablos Rojos, celebrated the milestone on the field, collecting the ball while Canó saluted the crowd. Thanks to the efforts of SABR members Adam Darowski, Scott Simkus, and Von Spalding, Canó became the first player to celebrate the milestone in real time.
Fewer than two dozen players are confirmed to have reached 4,000 professional hits—when counting stats from the regular season and postseason of competitive professional leagues (major, minor, or independent) around the world, along with international tournaments. As Simkus wrote in 2013 when he published the first list of players with 4,000 professional hits at SABR.org, “A player who reaches 4,000 hits in any professional baseball environment — in any country, in any era — exists in rarified air.” At that time, there were only nine known members. By the time Darowski delivered his research presentation on the 4,000 Hit Club at SABR 53 this summer, there were 21.
Now, we can add Robinson Canó to this list — and one more new player, Vinicio “Chico” García, a one-time Baltimore Orioles infielder and a Hall of Famer in his native Mexico, whose stats were rediscovered 55 years after he played in his final game.

Get involved: SABR BioProject seeks reviewers, editors
The SABR Biography Project needs your help! All baseball biographies submitted to the BioProject undergo rigorous editing, which includes initial vetting and editing, fact–checking, and copy editing. We are looking for volunteers for each of these stages.
These editors play an important role in the development of the bios and help ensure the high quality and critical acclaim of our research. While experience in editing and fact checking is helpful, it is not necessary. We encourage anyone interested to contact Rory Costello or Gregory H. Wolf for more details.
