Steve Steinberg

Steve Steinberg is a baseball historian of the early 20th century, with a particular focus on New York and St. Louis baseball. The book he co-authored with Lyle Spatz, 1921: The Yankees, the Giants, and the Battle for Baseball Supremacy in New York, was awarded the 2011 Seymour Medal as the best baseball book (history and biography) of 2010. Steve and Lyle are currently working on The Colonel and Hug, a book on New York Yankees’ owner Jacob Ruppert (1915-1939) and manager Miller Huggins (1918-1929), which will appear in spring 2015, the 100th anniversary of Ruppert’s buying the Yankees. As with 1921, it will be published by the University of Nebraska Press. Steve has also written Baseball in St. Louis, 1900-1925, a book on both the Cardinals and the Browns, with more than 100 stories and 180 rare and revealing images, as well on essays on the course and fortunes of the two teams. His articles have appeared in research journals, historical society publications, and publications of the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals. Steve is dedicated to “recovering” forgotten figures of the National Pastime and “uncovering” overlooked stories of the more well-known personalities of the game. All with an eye toward honoring them in “the glory of their times.”

Steve has published more than twenty articles and has delivered papers at many national conventions and conferences. He also maintains a web site, stevesteinberg.net. Steve and his wife live in Seattle, where their three twenty-something children drop in on a semi-regular basis.
