40,000 rare images now available in SABR-Rucker Archive
More than 40,000 baseball images from the SABR-Rucker Archive are now available online at SABR.org. The Rucker Archive is one of the most extensive collections of baseball imagery in North America, covering the roots of baseball in the 19th century up to current major league teams and players.
Recently uploaded images — which were donated by longtime SABR member and photo archivist Mark Rucker — include rare photos of baseball greats Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg, and Minnie Miñoso; spring training during World War II; reproductions of early baseball cards; along with photos from World Series games, the Negro Leagues, and the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The first batch of 10,000 Rucker Archive images was uploaded to SABR.org earlier this year.
We are now in the process of cataloging in order to make all of the images available as part of the search engine on SABR.org. Please click here to sign up as a catalog volunteer.
Register now for the 2023 SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference
Join us for the fifth annual SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference, which will be held virtually on September 29-October 1, 2023. All baseball fans are welcome to attend!
This year’s conference — co-sponsored by SABR and the International Women’s Baseball Center and hosted by Rockford University — is a virtual event with the theme “Through the Lens of Baseball.” The conference will feature research presentations, panels, pylon unveiling, presentation of the Dorothy Award and keynote speaker Melissa Ludtke. Stay tuned for the full schedule to be released soon.
Visit SABR.org/women-in-baseball-conference for complete details. Hope to see you there!
Join us on August 31 for a SABR x Baseball Connect live Q&A
Baseball fans, join us on Thursday, August 31 at 8:00 p.m. ET for a SABR x Baseball Connect Live Q&A on Twitter Spaces!
Featuring Dan Kaplan and Mike Tampellini from Baseball Connect as well as SABR’s Rob Arthur, the SABR-hosted event will give attendees insight into both the Baseball Connect platform and SABR’s Analytics Certification program and how each can help expand knowledge of the game while developing professional skills and a portfolio for a career in baseball.
Follow @SABR on Twitter for details and the link to the Twitter Spaces session on August 31.
SABR Digital Library: The Stars Shone on Philadelphia: The 1934 Negro National League Champions
Add a new baseball book to your collection from the SABR Digital Library: The Stars Shone on Philadelphia: The 1934 Negro National League Champions, edited by Frederick C. Bush and Bill Nowlin, tells the story of one of Black baseball’s most underrated great teams.
Led by future Hall of Famers Raleigh “Biz” Mackey and Jud Wilson, and dynamic owner Ed Bolden off the field, the Stars claimed the Negro National League’s second-half championship over the Pittsburgh Crawfords and defeated the first-half champion Chicago American Giants to claim their first league crown. The biographies of each Stars player, accounts of key games, and a timeline of their championship team are included here.
SABR members can download the e-book edition for free or save 50% off the purchase of the paperback edition at SABR.org/ebooks.
Join us on September 7 for Ballpark Figures with Bianca Smith
Join us each month for SABR’s Ballpark Figures, a new interview series hosted by Shakeia Taylor. The virtual Zoom event is free and open to all active SABR members.
On Thursday, September 7, we’ll hear from Bianca Smith, who in 2020 became the first African-American woman to serve as a professional baseball coach when she was hired by the Boston Red Sox. She now works in Japan as a Sports Exchange Advisor with the JET Program.
Visit SABR.org/ballpark-figures to learn more or to watch replays of past episodes.
