Welcome to “This Week in SABR!” Click here to view this week’s newsletter on the web. Here’s what we’ve been up to as of June 23, 2017:

SABR 47: New York City convention begins next week!

We have an exciting SABR 47 convention planned in the Big Apple, and we hope you’ll join us June 28-July 2 at the Grand Hyatt New York in Midtown Manhattan. Click here to view the complete schedule for SABR 47.

Which Stengelese phrase, Yogi-ism, or Ball Four story will bring the most laughs? Who will win the world-famous SABR Trivia Contest? Will the Mets make any tabloid headlines before we get to Citi Field? You won’t know unless you join us at SABR 47!

Even if you can’t make it for the entire convention, single-day registration for SABR 47 is also available on-site for $149 per day for Thursday, June 29 and/or Saturday, July 1 or $99 for the morning of Friday, June 30. Registration includes admission to all convention panels, research presentations, and committee meetings at the Grand Hyatt New York on those days. You’ll need to also purchase a Mets game ticket — and remember to bring your convention badge! — in order to enter the ballpark early for our special pregame session at Citi Field next Friday. Registration can be purchased during normal registration hours via cash, check, or credit card (sorry, no American Express accepted.)

Here is the schedule for the How to Do Baseball Research table:

SABR 47: Looking for on-site presentation judges

On-site judges are needed for SABR 47 research presentations. Each judge will be responsible for viewing and evaluating oral and poster presentations during SABR 47 in New York City.

Judges need not be “experts” in particular topics. They may choose which oral presentations they wish to evaluate, but are requested to judge all oral presentations they attend.

Through on-site judging, the most highly regarded presentations will receive the Doug Pappas Award for best oral presentation and the SABR Convention Poster Presentation Award for best poster presentation. The Pappas Award winner will have the opportunity to repeat that presentation on Saturday evening.

If you’re interested, send a message to the Research Presentations email at sabr2017presentations@gmail.com and to Neal Traven at beisbol@alumni.pitt.edu.

As you prepare for your trip to SABR 47 next week, members of the host Casey Stengel Chapter have compiled a list of transportation tips — including directions from regional airports to the Grand Hyatt New York — to help visitors and convention attendees enjoy their stay in New York City. If you have any questions during your stay, please don’t hesitate to ask a friendly SABR 47 volunteer for assistance.

Click here to view the SABR 47 transportation tips.

Note: For anyone just going to the Mets game on Friday, June 30 and not attending the SABR 47 ballpark session at Citi Field, there will be a group leaving the hotel together in the late afternoon and taking the subway to the ballpark. More details will be posted on the bulletin board near the SABR registration area at the Grand Hyatt during the convention.

A look back at our last New York City convention, SABR 21 in 1991

It’s been more than a quarter-century since SABR’s national convention was held in New York City, but our 21st annual gathering in 1991 was a memorable event for everyone involved.

Next week, we’ll return to the Big Apple for SABR 47 at the Grand Hyatt in midtown Manhattan. More than 700 SABR members and friends are expected to attend.

Back in 1991, SABR was celebrating two decades since the organization was founded at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Later that summer, founding members Bob Davids, Dan Dischley, Tom Hufford, Cliff Kachline, Pat McDonough, John Pardon, and Joe Simenic gathered at the Hall of Fame Library in Cooperstown to commemorate SABR’s 20th anniversary.

The SABR 21 convention was held June 27-30, 1991, at the Hotel Pennsylvania on 7th Avenue, across the street from Madison Square Garden. On Saturday evening, 405 convention attendees were treated to a keynote speech from retired New York Yankees announcer Mel Allen. The banquet also featured musical entertainment from Terry Cashman, who played a special version of his hit song, “Willie, Mickey, and the Duke (Talkin’ Baseball),” plus a stirring performance (if you can call it that!) from the Brooklyn Dodgers Sym-Phony Band.

SABR members watched a special preview of Ken Burns’ upcoming documentary film, Baseball, had a chance to hear original audio clips from author Lawrence Ritter‘s The Glory of Their Times interviews, and took in a Mets-Phillies game at Shea Stadium.

SABR Digital Library: Puerto Rico and Baseball

Celebrate la vida béisbol, and add this new baseball book from the SABR Digital Library to your collection:

Puerto Rico and Baseball: 60 Biographies
Edited by Bill Nowlin and Edwin Fernández
Associate Editors: Len Levin and Carl Riechers

ISBN (paperback):
978-1-943816-53-8, $21.95
ISBN (ebook):
978-1-943816-52-1, $9.99
8.5 x 11″, 430 pages

Baseball in Puerto Rico has a long history, dating back to the nineteenth century and now extending into the twenty-first. As of the end of 2016, there have been 323 players born in Puerto Rico or descended from Puerto Rican natives who have played in the major leagues. But there are thousands of Puerto Rican professional players who have played in the Caribbean and other professional leagues, including the minor leagues in the United States.

As one might imagine from the title, Puerto Rico and Baseball: 60 Biographies contains 60 biographies of players — but it also has two “ballpark bios” and an article on major-league games played in Puerto Rico, both spring training exhibition games and several regular-season games from the time when “Los Expos” included San Juan as their home base.

This book highlights some of the pioneers who played in the Negro Leagues before the color line was broken, right up through Ivan Rodriguez, elected in 2017 to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In reading this book you will get to know Perucho, who was compared with Ty Cobb and called the Babe Ruth of Puerto Rico; why Pancho Coimbre was considered one of the best hitters; the story of the great Roberto Clemente; who was “el Divino Loco,” the first pitcher to win a major-league game on the Pacific Coast; who was “El Jibaro”; and even the great achievements of the man who was possibly the most complete catcher who ever stepped on a diamond.

This book also represents the collaborative efforts of 46 authors and editors from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

Contributors include: Jane Allen-Quevedo, Mark Armour, Jonathan Arnold, Thomas J. Brown Jr., Justin Omar Cabrera, Alan Cohen, Jorge Colón-Delgado, Rory Costello, Richard Cuicchi, Scott Cummings, Scott Dominiak, Kyle Eaton, Rob Edelman, Amy Essington, Charles F. 1951 New York Giants biographies now posted online

In SABR’s The Team That Time Won’t Forget: The 1951 New York Giants, edited by Bill Nowlin and C. Paul Rogers III and published in 2015, we focused on a team that will forever be in baseball public’s consciousness. But of course, there is much more to the story of that famous team than Bobby Thomson‘s dramatic home run (albeit the most famous and probably the most dramatic home run in baseball history) and sign stealing.

The 1951 Giants are also of historic significance because of their role in the integration of baseball. It was the year Willie Mays first showed his brilliance to major-league audiences, in late May joining black teammates Monte Irvin, Hank Thompson, and Ray Noble. At the time, the Dodgers and Giants had most of the smattering of African-American players in the big leagues, and it is no surprise that those two teams battled down to the wire for the National League pennant.

The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in our 1951 Giants book can now be read online at: SABR.org/category/completed-book-projects/1951-new-york-giants

You can also download the e-book for free or purchase the paperback edition at 50% off by clicking here. SABR members can download all SABR Digital Library e-books for free at SABR.org/ebooks.
