Watch: 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners to be announced on Tuesday
The 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award® winners will be unveiled during a one-hour, ESPN “Baseball Tonight” primetime special on Tuesday, November 8, beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET.
- Gold Glove finalists: View the 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists at MLB.com
- Latest SDI rankings: View the latest in-season SABR Defensive Index positional rankings among Rawlings Gold Glove Award qualifiers
For the fourth consecutive season, the SABR Defensive Index™ will be used to help select the winners of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award and Rawlings Platinum Glove Award™, presented by SABR. The SABR Defensive Index accounts for approximately 25 percent of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process that was added to the votes from the managers and coaches.
The latest SDI rankings can be found at SABR.org/SDI. The final SDI results will be released following the announcement of the Gold Glove winners on Tuesday night.
Following the ESPN announcement telecast, voting for the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award™ presented by SABR will begin at Rawlings.com, allowing the general public to weigh in as to who is “The Finest in the Field®” in both the American League and National League. Fans can only select one player among the 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners from each League. A combination of the international fan vote and the SABR Defensive Index will determine who takes home the honor of each League’s top defensive player.
Learn more about the SABR Defensive Index and view updated rankings at SABR.org/SDI.

2016 SABR Arizona Fall League Experience gets under way
The Hot Stove is warming up and so are attendees at the eighth annual SABR Arizona Fall League Experience, which kicked off this week and continues through Saturday.
A rare burst of wet weather in Arizona postponed the opening game of the conference Thursday night at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, so attendees were treated to dinner at a local Chicago-themed pizza eatery as we enjoyed a replay of the Cubs’ thrilling World Series victory over the Cleveland Indians.
Today, AFL Experience attendees will take in a game at Peoria Sports Complex followed by a special ballpark dinner at Scottsdale Stadium with guest speakers Steve Cobb, president of the Arizona Fall League, and former Cubs outfielder Byron Browne.
On Saturday morning, attendees will join members of SABR’s Flame Delhi (Arizona) Chapter for their regional fall meeting, where we’ll have a Broadcasters Panel with Oakland A’s voice Vince Cotroneo and Marty Lurie of KNBR; Barry Bloom will talk about the recent World Series that he covered; former MLB pitcher John D’Acquisto will tell stories about his own baseball career; and former scout Bernie Pleskoff will talk about the top Fall Stars Game prospects. Saturday night is always a highlight of the conference as the top prospects from every organization participate in the AFL Fall Stars Game at Surprise Stadium.

Chicago Cubs win historic World Series on a ‘Golden Pitch’
Earlier this year, in the Spring 2016 Baseball Research Journal, SABR member Wade Kapszukiewicz introduced the concept of “Golden Pitches” — which he had discovered to be one of the rarest occurrences in all of baseball. A Golden Pitch is any pitch thrown when both teams have an opportunity to win (or lose) the World Series with just one swing of the bat.
That had only happened seven times in World Series history, first in 1912 when Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants blew a 10th-inning lead in the decisive final game against the Boston Red Sox, and most recently in 2014 when Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants cemented his own postseason legend by nailing down a save in Game Seven against the Kansas City Royals.
Until this week.
As if Game Seven of this year’s World Series wasn’t historic and thrilling enough, Kapszukiewicz’s idea of a Golden Pitch came into play again late Wednesday night as his beloved Cleveland Indians went into extra innings against the Chicago Cubs, with both teams on the verge of erasing decades of World Series futility in a Fall Classic for the ages. The Indians had been burned once before in a Golden Pitch situation, back in 1997 when they were on the other end. Closer Jose Mesa tried in vain to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning of Game Seven against the Florida Marlins, who tied it up and then went on to win it all in the 11th. This time, the Indians were at home in Cleveland trying to rally against the Cubs, who took a two-run lead entering the bottom of the 10th.
After the Indians scored a run to cut Chicago’s lead to 8-7, Cubs reliever Mike Montgomery faced Cleveland’s Michael Martinez with two outs and the tying run on base. Like Tris Speaker, Willie McCovey, and Pete Rose before him, Martinez now had the opportunity to possibly win the World Series with a home run … or end it by grounding out to third base, which he did to secure the Cubs’ first championship since 1908.
Out of the estimated 49 million pitches ever thrown in the World Series era since 1903, only about 40 of them have been Golden, including the two that Montgomery threw to Martinez on Wednesday night. Now that the Cubs have finally shed their “Lovable Losers” identity with a long-awaited title after 108 years — just like actor Bill Murray predicted in the The National Pastime! — Indians fans can only hope their next Golden Pitch situation results in a shiny, golden trophy instead.

Register now for the 2017 Diamond Dollars Case Competition at SABR Analytics
The SABR Analytics Conference is pleased to host the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Click here for more details.
In the Diamond Dollars Case Competition, undergraduate, graduate and professional school students from colleges and universities across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season. The cases are developed by SABR President Vince Gennaro, author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball, and consultant to MLB teams. The Diamond Dollars Case Competition is the first national competition to be based solely on baseball operations issues.
Four- to five-person student teams are asked to evaluate a baseball operations case problem. The student team presents their analysis and recommendations to a panel of judges that includes MLB front office executives. More than a dozen alumni from the first five Diamond Dollars Case Competitions have secured internships or permanent positions within Major League Baseball.
For more information on the 2017 Diamond Dollars Case Competition, please contact SABR President Vince Gennaro or click here for rules and entry requirements.

Negro Leagues star ‘Topeka Jack’ Johnson honored with new grave marker
About 30 people gathered on Saturday, October 28 in Topeka, Kansas, for the unveiling of a grave marker for “Topeka Jack” Johnson (1883-1940), a noted black baseball player/manager and boxer, at the Mount Auburn Cemetery.
SABR member Jan Johnson (no relation) spearheaded an effort to recognize Topeka Jack, who helped organize the Topeka Giants and Kansas City Giants, two prominent black barnstorming teams in the first decade of the 20th century.
“In his prime, his athletic pursuits and achievements were a source of great pride for the Topeka community. It’s time they should be again,” Jan Johnson said. “Jack did the hard part — he left a legacy worth preserving. Now it’s up to us to value that legacy through the simple acts of remembrance, respect and appreciation.”
Read a recap of the ceremony by Todd Fertig of the Topeka Capital-Journal.
Click here to view Topeka Jack Johnson’s stats at the Seamheads Negro Leagues Database.
The program was sponsored in part by the SABR Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project. Click here to make a tax-deductible donation to help support the project. Your contribution will be used to help locate the gravesites of former ballplayers from the Negro Leagues and adorn them with proper headstones.

1986 Mets biographies now posted online
In SABR’s The 1986 New York Mets: There Was More Than Game Six, edited by Leslie Heaphy and Bill Nowlin and published by SABR in 2016, we paid tribute to a historic team whose World Series championship remains a touchstone for generations of Mets fans.
The 1986 New York Mets includes biographies of every player, coach, broadcaster, and other important figures in baseball’s top organization that year — from stars like Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Gary Carter, and Keith Hernandez to manager Davey Johnson to iconic voices like Ralph Kiner and Tim McCarver.
This book on the 1986 season re-tells the story of that year’s classic World Series between the Mets and the Boston Red Sox. After four games, each team had won two away games and neither had won at home. Then the Red Sox won Game Five at Fenway, and were one game away from winning their first world championship in 86 years. It came to the point they were one pitch away from baseball Nirvana. And then …
Just about everyone knows what happened, but there are takes on it here you might not have read elsewhere. Mostly, this is the story of each of the players, coaches, managers, and broadcasters, their lives in baseball, and the way the 1986 season fit into their lives.
The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in The 1986 New York Mets can now be read online at: http://sabr.org/category/completed-book-projects/1986-new-york-mets
You can also purchase the book or download the e-book — along with its companion volume on the 1986 Boston Red Sox — by clicking here. SABR members can download all SABR Digital Library e-books for free at SABR.org/ebooks.
