This Week in SABR: November 18, 2016

Welcome to “This Week in SABR!” Click here to view this week’s newsletter on the web. Here’s what we’ve been up to as of November 18, 2016:

Rizzo, Lindor win 2016 Rawlings Platinum Glove Awards, presented by SABR

Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor and Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo won the 2016 Rawlings Platinum Glove Award, presented by SABR. The winners were unveiled on Friday, November 11 during the 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award Ceremony, where the game’s defensive stars accepted their hardware from some of baseball’s greatest legends.

This marks the first time since the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award started in 2011 that two first-year Rawlings Gold Glove winners have won the Platinum Award.

Lindor became the first Puerto Rican shortstop and is the youngest shortstop since 1980 to win the Rawlings Gold Glove Award. He is also the youngest player to ever win the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award.

At 27 years old, Rizzo became the youngest player in Cubs franchise history to win a Rawlings Gold Glove Award and the Platinum Glove Award.

The Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners are determined by combining votes based on an adjusted SABR Defensive Index for each of the nine Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners in each League and the votes from baseball fans worldwide. Based on the final SDI rankings, Lindor led all American League shortstops with a 18.5 SDI, and Rizzo finished the season with a 8.6 SDI.

“This year, the SABR Defensive Index and fan votes were closely aligned,” said Vince Gennaro, president of SABR and chair of the SABR Fielding Committee. “More and more fans are paying attention to defensive metrics, and it seems to be influencing their votes.”

Early registration now open for 2017 SABR Analytics Conference

Early registration is now open for the sixth annual SABR Analytics Conference on March 9-11, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. We hope you’ll join us next spring in Arizona, where we’ll bring together the top minds in the baseball analytics community to discuss, debate and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball. All baseball fans are welcome to attend.

SABR has a long and storied history with baseball statistical analysis, evidenced by the link between our name and sabermetrics. SABR’s long history in this area of baseball research, coupled with our mission of advancing the understanding and knowledge of baseball, makes us the perfect choice to coordinate and host this ground-breaking event.

The Analytics Conference schedule consists of a combination of Guest Speakers, Panels, and Research Presentations — plus the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition, in which undergraduate, graduate and law school students from across the country analyze and present a real baseball operations decision.

For more information on the 2017 SABR Analytics Conference, visit SABR.org/analytics.

Students: Apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend 2017 SABR Analytics Conference

With generous funding from The Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school and college students who wish to attend the 2017 SABR Analytics Conference. This scholarship will pay for registration, air transportation and lodging up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Jeff Schatzki at jschatzki@sabr.org no later than December 31, 2016.

The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage student engagement with baseball analytics, and to engender an active interest in baseball research and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend SABR’s Analytics Conference and to introduce them to fellow SABR members and professionals within the baseball community. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

Register now for the 2017 Diamond Dollars Case Competition at SABR Analytics

The SABR Analytics Conference is pleased to host the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Click here for more details.

In the Diamond Dollars Case Competition, undergraduate, graduate and professional school students from colleges and universities across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season. The cases are developed by SABR President Vince Gennaro, author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball, and consultant to MLB teams. The Diamond Dollars Case Competition is the first national competition to be based solely on baseball operations issues.

Four- to five-person student teams are asked to evaluate a baseball operations case problem. The student team presents their analysis and recommendations to a panel of judges that includes MLB front office executives. More than a dozen alumni from the first five Diamond Dollars Case Competitions have secured internships or permanent positions within Major League Baseball.

For more information on the 2017 Diamond Dollars Case Competition, please contact SABR President Vince Gennaro or click here for rules and entry requirements.

Save the date! 2017 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference returning to Harrisburg

The 20th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee, will be returning to its roots on July 27-30, 2017, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, site of the first Negro League conference in 1998. A registration packet and more information will be available in early 2017 at SABR.org/malloy.

The Malloy Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. For the past 19 years, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and a nationwide art contest.

The Negro Leagues Committee is one of SABR’s original committees, formed in 1971. It has continued to preserve and highlight the contributions of African-American players in baseball history. The committee published the landmark The Negro Leagues Book in 1994, which featured a complete register of more than 3,000 players, team rosters and in-depth histories from leagues of the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth.

The committee has also spawned the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project, which was started in 2003 by SABR member Jeremy Krock and has provided proper grave markers to the unmarked graves of more than 20 former Negro Leagues players around the country.

Check back soon at SABR.org/malloy for registration and hotel information on the 20th annual Malloy Conference in 2017. Hope to see you in Harrisburg!

The 1979 World Series champion Pirates are one of the most memorable teams in baseball history and helped define an era. When Pops Led the Family celebrates this team and its cast of characters, including Willie Stargell, Manny Sanguillen, John Candelaria, and Kent Tekulve. Featuring contributions from 39 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), this book includes biographies of all of the players, members of the coaching staff, and some of the the front office, an in-depth season summary, and detailed game accounts from some of the most pivotal games of the season and all of the postseason games. Q&A with award-winning SABR authors Lyle Spatz and Steve Steinberg

Lyle Spatz and Steve Steinberg are among the Deadball Era Committee and SABR’s most accomplished members. Baseball historians and authors, they have not only garnered recognition in their own rights, but collaborated on two award-winning books about New York baseball in the post- World War I era. 1921: The Yankees, the Giants, and the Battle for Baseball Supremacy in New York, was the 2011 winner of the prestigious Seymour Medal for the year’s best work on baseball history or biography. This year, The Colonel and Hug, their dual biography of Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert and manager Miller Huggins, was a SABR Baseball Research Award recipient for outstanding research project.

One of the distinguishing features of the Spatz-Steinberg books is their seamless narrative voice. Although either Lyle or Steve had to put a particular sentence, paragraph, or chapter into words, it is near-impossible to tell who wrote what. Recently, the authors responded to questions about their collaborative process posed by SABR Deadball Era Committee newsletter editor Bill Lamb, in an article that first appeared this week in “The Inside Game” newsletter.

Five new biographies were posted this week as part of the SABR Baseball Biography Project, which brings us to a total of 3,931 published biographies. Here are the new bios published this week:

All new biographies can be found here: http://sabr.org/bioproj/recent

Ideally, we would like to have the bios written, edited, and fact-checked by the end of 2016 so we can post them on the BioProject website and on social media before the election announcements. Please contact Emily Hawks at emilyhawks@gmail.com if you are interested in writing about one of these players.

1986 Mets biographies now posted online

In SABR’s The 1986 New York Mets: There Was More Than Game Six, edited by Leslie Heaphy and Bill Nowlin and published by SABR in 2016, we paid tribute to a historic team whose World Series championship remains a touchstone for generations of Mets fans.

The 1986 New York Mets includes biographies of every player, coach, broadcaster, and other important figures in baseball’s top organization that year — from stars like Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Gary Carter, and Keith Hernandez to manager Davey Johnson to iconic voices like Ralph Kiner and Tim McCarver.

This book on the 1986 season re-tells the story of that year’s classic World Series between the Mets and the Boston Red Sox. After four games, each team had won two away games and neither had won at home. Then the Red Sox won Game Five at Fenway, and were one game away from winning their first world championship in 86 years. It came to the point they were one pitch away from baseball Nirvana. And then …

Just about everyone knows what happened, but there are takes on it here you might not have read elsewhere. Mostly, this is the story of each of the players, coaches, managers, and broadcasters, their lives in baseball, and the way the 1986 season fit into their lives.

The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in The 1986 New York Mets can now be read online at: http://sabr.org/category/completed-book-projects/1986-new-york-mets

You can also purchase the book or download the e-book — along with its companion volume on the 1986 Boston Red Sox — by clicking here. SABR members can download all SABR Digital Library e-books for free at SABR.org/ebooks.

In Memoriam

  • Dr. Gail Rowe, 79, of Greeley, Colorado, died on November 13, 2016 after a brief illness. He joined SABR in 1995 and was actively involved as chairman of the Seymour Medal selection committee and as the longtime book review editor for the Deadball Era Committee newsletter. He spent more than three decades as a history professor at the University of Northern Colorado, and his course on baseball history was “wildly popular.” After his retirement in 2002, he wrote four novels, combining his love for baseball and mystery, and pursued a passion for art as an oil painter specializing in western landscapes. He was born December 2, 1936, in Long Beach, California, and after lettering in three sports in high school, he attended Fresno State University on football and baseball scholarships. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Jordan, in 1957, and they had two children. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in American History from Stanford University and began his tenure at UNC in 1969. He produced hundreds of critically acclaimed articles and book reviews, and earned multiple teaching excellence and distinguished scholar awards. He is survived by his wife, Mary Rowe; daughter Jennifer I. Rowe and fiance Kip Minnery; son Justin Rowe and daughter-in-law Jennifer E. Rowe; and two grandsons. Services will be held Sunday, November 20 in the Pikes Peak Ballroom at UNC in Greeley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health or the Weld Food Bank. Click here to read the full obituary.
