You’re not going to want to miss the ninth annual SABR Day on Saturday, January 27!

SABR Day is our annual Hot Stove gathering to celebrate the beginning of a new baseball season. It’s always held on the weekend between the NFL championship games and the Super Bowl. On that day, SABR’s regional chapters organize baseball events around the globe, and you’re all invited to attend.

SABR Day meetings can include premier guest speakers, such as new Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who will speak at the SABR Day event in Puerto Rico, and former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager and current Toronto Blue Jays scout Dan Evans, who will speak at the Rocky Mountain Chapter meeting in Denver.

SABR’s Boston Chapter will hold a special Winter Festival at Fenway Park, hosted by Red Sox historian and SABR member Gordon Edes. Speakers will include former Red Sox reliever and Yale University graduate Craig Breslow and presentations from historians Bill Nowlin, Bob Brady, and Saul Wisnia on a number of other Boston-related baseball topics, including the tale of a nomadic college team, the Wentworth Leopards; the Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities program; and the amazing Boston Renegades and their Beep Baseball saga. Lunch is included, plus you can participate in The Great Red Sox Trivia Contest with a prize of four tickets and a personal tour of Fenway Park conducted by Edes. Register now to join us in Boston.

SABR’s Casey Stengel Chapter in New York City, hosts of last summer’s SABR 47 national convention, have a terrific SABR Day event on Saturday at the New York Public Library, with guest speakers that include Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, major-league umpire Phil Cuzzi, “Talking Baseball” radio host Ed Randall, former New York Mets player Art Shamsky, baseball scout Tom Giordano, and NYPL Senior Rare Book Cataloger Virginia Bartow, who will present highlights from the library’s collections. Two of our newest chapters in New Jersey, the Elysian Fields Chapter in Hoboken and the Goose Goslin Chapter in Cherry Hill, will host SABR Day events for the first time on Saturday. The Elysian Fields Chapter will meet at the Hoboken Library, with Negro Leagues documentary filmmaker Lauren Meyer, plus Chris Shearn from the YES Network and representatives from the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center. The Goose Goslin Chapter will meet at the Cherry Hill Public Library, where presentations will be given on the chapter’s Hall of Fame namesake and Mike Schmidt.

MLB pitching coach Rick Peterson to speak at 2018 SABR Analytics Conference

We’re excited to welcome former major-league pitching coach Rick Peterson, author Crunch Time: How to Be Your Best When It Matters Most, as a featured panelist at the 2018 SABR Analytics Conference.

Early registration is still open for the seventh annual SABR Analytics Conference on Friday, March 9 to Sunday, March 11, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix, but you should register before February 15 to take advantage of the early registration discounted rate. Our special group rate at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix also expires on February 15, 2018.

This year’s conference will feature the high-quality content you’ve always enjoyed at the SABR Analytics Conference and the same number of featured panels and research presentations, but there will be a few changes to the usual schedule: We will begin programming early Friday afternoon on March 9 and will run through Sunday afternoon on March 11. The change in schedule is due to the availability at our host hotel this year. However, we have a large block of rooms for SABR Analytics Conference attendees on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

In addition, the Diamond Dollars Case Competition will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening and the networking reception will be held on Saturday evening, March 10 at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. Lunch, which is included in your conference registration, will be served at noon on Friday — before the regular programming begins — and also on Saturday between the morning and afternoon sessions.

Jerald Podair’s City of Dreams wins 2018 SABR Seymour Medal

City of Dreams: Dodger Stadium and the Birth of Modern Los Angeles, written by Jerald Podair and published by Princeton University Press, is the winner of the 2018 Dr. Harold and Dorothy Seymour Medal, which honors the best book of baseball history or biography published during the preceding calendar year.

Podair will receive his award at the banquet of the 25th annual NINE Spring Training Conference on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Tempe, Arizona.

The banquet includes the Seymour Medal ceremony with Dorothy Seymour Mills, dinner, and the NINE keynote address by SABR member Jane Leavy, author of Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy; The Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America’s Childhood; and the baseball novel Squeeze Play. Announcing finalists for inaugural Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award

We are pleased to announce the finalists for the inaugural Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by SABR’s Women in Baseball Committee. Each of these finalists has made important contributions promoting the participation of women in baseball, on the field and off.

In 2017, SABR’s Women in Baseball Committee established the Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award — “The Dorothy” — named in honor of Dorothy Seymour Mills and her lifetime of contributions to promoting women’s baseball. Here are the finalists for the 2018 award:

SABR 48: Call for presentations

SABR invites all members to present their research findings to their colleagues attending SABR 48, which will be held June 20-24, 2018, at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh. Early registration is now available at SABR.org/convention.

Oral presentations are expected to last 20 minutes, followed by a five minute question-and-answer period. Posters will be presented, with the author on-hand to discuss the work, during a poster session of 60 minutes and they will remain on display throughout the convention. Through on-site judging, the most highly-regarded presentations will receive the Doug Pappas Award for best oral presentation and the SABR Convention Poster Presentation Award for best poster presentation.

The submission deadline for SABR 48 abstracts is midnight PST, Sunday, FEBRUARY 25, 2018. Click here for complete details and application form.

Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 48 in Pittsburgh

With generous funding from The Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 48 on June 20-24, 2018, in Pittsburgh. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250.

The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage high school and college-level student engagement with baseball research and to engender an active interest in baseball and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend SABR’s annual convention and to introduce them to fellow SABR members. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Jeff Schatzki at jschatzki@sabr.org no later than FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 2018.

Baseball writers elect Jones, Guerrero, Thome, Hoffman to Hall of Fame

Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome, and Trevor Hoffman were announced as the newest inductees to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on January 24, 2018.

Jones, the 1999 NL MVP and star third baseman for the Atlanta Braves, received 97.2 percent of the 422 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in his first year on the ballot. He is the sixth member of the Braves’ dynasty to make the Hall of Fame, joining Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and manager Bobby Cox (2014), John Smoltz (2015), and GM John Schuerholz (2017) in baseball’s Valhalla. That group led Atlanta to 14 consecutive division titles, five pennants, and one World Series championship between 1991 and 2005.

Guerrero, the free-swinging Dominican outfielder with a rocket arm who drew comparisons to Roberto Clemente, received 392 votes (92.1 percent) in his second year on the writers’ ballot. Guerrero came up with the Montreal Expos in 1996 and later won an MVP award for the then-Anaheim Angels in 2004.  

Thome, who received 379 votes (89.8 percent) as a first-ballot selection, hit 612 home runs in his 22-season career with the Cleveland Indians and five other teams. As Joseph Wancho wrote in his SABR biography of the slugger, Thome was “a dependable, hard-working, blue-collar type of ballplayer whom fans cheered for … a ‘throwback.'”

Hoffman, the San Diego Padres closer who missed election by just five votes in 2017, made it to Cooperstown in his third year on the ballot. The first pitcher to reach the 600-save milestone received 337 votes for 79.9 percent.

In addition, former Detroit Tigers stars Alan Trammell and Jack Morris were also selected for induction to the Hall of Fame by the Modern Era Committee.

Seattle Mariners slugger Edgar Martinez fell 20 votes shy of induction in his ninth year of eligibility, receiving 297 votes for 70.4 percent. Pitchers Mike Mussina (63.5) and Roger Clemens (57.3), outfielder Barry Bonds (56.4) and pitcher Curt Schilling (51.2) were also named on more than half of the ballots cast.

2018 Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend primary election

2018 is here and it’s time to start the ball rolling as we choose our Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend of the year.

Last year, Bob Caruthers (pictured at right) joined previous winners Pete Browning (2009), Hall of Famer Deacon White (2010), Harry Stovey (2011), Bill Dahlen (2012), Ross Barnes (2013), Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams (2014), Tony Mullane (2015), and Jack Glasscock (2016) as SABR’s Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legends.

The preliminary voting process, which we call the Overlooked Primary Election, will consist of each voter selecting 10 names from the list of 26 candidates. The top 10 will be presented to the SABR membership in May 2018, when all members will be able to vote in the final election. The winner will be announced at the SABR 48 convention this summer in Pittsburgh.

Call for nominations: 2018 SABR Board of Directors election

The SABR Nominating Committee seeks nominations for candidates for the Spring 2018 elections. All candidates for the Board of Directors must have been members of the Society for at least the preceding four years to be eligible for election. Deadline for nominations is February 28, 2018. Nominees must prepare a Candidate Statement Form following guidelines that will be available from any Nominating Committee member.

The Candidate Statement Form must be received by the Nominating Committee chair no later than March 16, 2018.

The offices to be filled:

  • Vice President (2-year term; currently Leslie Heaphy)
  • Secretary (3-year term; currently Todd Lebowitz)
  • Director (3-year term; currently Ty Waterman)

The Nominating Committee also seeks your input. Members are asked to submit office-specific questions for each of the offices open in this election. We also seek input on general questions for every nominee. Candidates will answer selected questions on the Candidate Statement Form. Regional Chapter leaders and Research Committee Chairs are especially encouraged to pass on this request to their respective members to better address member needs.

Behind the Numbers: Baseball SABR Style on SiriusXM, a radio show hosted by SABR President Vince Gennaro, is back for the Hot Stove League offseason, at a new time: 4:00-5:00 p.m. ET on Sundays, on MLB Network Radio.

This week’s guests are SABR member Barry Bloom of MLB.com and Matthew Trueblood from Baseball Prospectus.

There will be no new show this week due to the holidays, but you can listen to archives of recent episodes on-demand on the SiriusXM Internet Radio App, and you can watch video highlights of Behind the Numbers: Baseball SABR Style on SiriusXM on MLB.com. Behind the Numbers: Baseball SABR Style on SiriusXM focuses on examining and interpreting the statistical analysis that plays a critical role in baseball today.
