Seeking research presentation judges at SABR 53
Judges of oral and poster presentations are sought for SABR 53 in Texas. Winners of the Doug Pappas Award for oral presentations and the Best Poster Award will be determined based on the on-site judges’ evaluations.
You’ll submit scores for whichever presentations you choose to attend/view, using forms that will be provided. (If you’re presenting a poster, you can still judge oral presentations and vice versa.) After evaluations for all presentations have been completed, a judges’ meeting will review the outcomes and make the final decisions.
To volunteer to be a presentation judge at SABR 53, or if you have any questions, please contact Neal Traven.
A look back at the 1994 SABR convention in Arlington
Next week, the annual SABR convention will return to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for the first time in three decades. We’ll visit Globe Life Field for a ballpark tour and Texas Rangers game and hear from a star-studded lineup of speakers. Back in 1994, The Ballpark at Arlington was the Rangers’ brand-new home, having opened earlier that season.
SABR’s 24th annual convention on June 16-19, 1994, drew 405 members and guests to the Arlington Marriott hotel for a packed schedule that included four panels, plus talks by recently retired Rangers star Nolan Ryan at the Friday luncheon and Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts at the Saturday banquet, which was emceed by broadcaster Gene Elston and included musical entertainment by Texas League president Bobby Bragan. John Thorn and Negro Leagues legend Buck O’Neil participated in a special session previewing the upcoming Ken Burns documentary series, Baseball, which aired on PBS later that year. A players panel included Roberts, O’Neil, Bragan, Frank Lucchesi, J.C. Hartman, and Charlie Pride.

Campaign for Baseball Research: Thanks for your support!
Thank you so much for your support of SABR during our Campaign for Baseball Research. Because of the generosity of our donors, we were able to exceed our $75,000 goal for this fundraising effort!
As we’ve outlined in this campaign, research is at the heart of what we do as an organization. SABR’s online Research Collection and array of Research Resources are major sources of pride and a key component in our vision of becoming the essential community for the world of baseball. Thanks to your support, we have bolstered our ability to expand, maintain, and preserve SABR’s Research Collection and Research Resources for current and future generations of baseball enthusiasts.
Upon setting out on this campaign, we highlighted several initiatives that would be maintained and funded by a successful drive. Since we have reached our goal, we will be following through with our commitment to add the Seamheads Negro League statistical database to SABR’s Research Resources, alongside our continuing efforts to preserve and improve our existing resources and collections.
We’d again like to thank all SABR members for your support of the organization, and most especially those who participated in the Campaign for Baseball Research listed here.
— Scott Bush
