SABR Member Benefit Spotlight: Vote now for All-Time Eras Teams

Voting is now open for SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams! Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will be able to vote for players across six different eras who make up an all-time elite team for that era. Help us celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876 by voting for your favorite players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. 

Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by SABR members like you.

• Voting is now open for the first two teams: the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and the Deadball Era (1901-1919); click here to cast your vote 

All current SABR members are eligible to vote. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era.

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Conference begins in Cooperstown

The 17th annual SABR Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference began today at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Programming runs through Saturday, April 25, and the event is now sold out.

The 2026 conference will be highlighted by a keynote address from author Bruce Allardice, along with a panel discussion on the evolution of early playing fields with Irwin Chusid, Thomas Gilbert, Jonathan Popovich, and moderator Bill Ryczek; a 19th-century artifact session with Robert Mayer, Gary Passamonte, and Jonathan Popovich; a Member Spotlight interview of Herm Krabbenhoft by Dave Newman; plus research presentations.

Join us at Tulane University on Saturday for Salute to the Negro Leagues Day

The Schott-Pelican SABR Chapter, in conjunction with the Tulane University Athletic Department, will sponsor a Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at a Tulane baseball game on Saturday, April 25 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, Lousiana. The event will raise awareness and understanding of Negro Leagues baseball in the area and honor local players and personalities.

All baseball fans are invited to attend. Click here to purchase discounted tickets for the ballgame, which begins at 6:30 p.m. as the Green Wave baseball team takes on the University of Texas at San Antonio. Check out the SABR booth on the main concourse where chapter members will be giving away 500 gameday posters (see below), along with Negro Leagues baseball cards, baseball books, Cracker Jacks, plus SABR membership forms and information.

The New Orleans-based Schott-Pelican Chapter was the recipient of a SABR Local Grant to help fund this event.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Students, apply for a Fall 2026 internship with SABR

The Society for American Baseball Research is seeking student interns to work during the Fall 2026 semester from September 1-December 1. The remote internship is an educational opportunity that may count toward college credit, covering 15-20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. The internship will be for a fixed period of time and is designed to provide the intern with skills and training that may be applicable to working in a nonprofit research environment or in other research-based organizations.

SABR welcomes new chapter in Long Island, New York

SABR’s Board of Directors has approved the formation of a new regional chapter. The Long Island Ralph Kiner Chapter serves members in the Long Island area of New York; the chapter leader is Mark Rosenman.

Scott Kiner, son of the late Hall of Fame slugger and beloved New York Mets broadcaster, approved the chapter’s request to honor his father and has expressed interest in supporting the chapter.

SABR All-Time Eras Team: Membership Drive begins

Refer two new members to SABR between now and May 13 to receive an exclusive baseball card set featuring players selected to our All-Time Eras Teams! 

In conjunction with SABR’s All-Time Eras Team voting initiative, new SABR members who sign up for an annual membership between April 7 and May 13, and use the code AllEras15, will receive a $15 discount, the exclusive All-Time Eras Team baseball card set, and the ability to participate in our Eras Team elections and speaker series. Voting opens next week for SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. The All-Time Eras Teams project is an interactive opportunity for all SABR members to participate in, debate with one another, and learn more about the iconic players and figures from different eras.

Each of the six All-Time Eras Team ballots will be released throughout the baseball season, beginning with the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and Deadball Era (1901-1919) teams on Friday, April 17. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by our members.

Join us at Tulane University on April 25 for Salute to the Negro Leagues Day

The Schott-Pelican SABR Chapter, in conjunction with the Tulane University Athletic Department, will sponsor a Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at a Tulane baseball game on Saturday, April 25 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, Lousiana. The event will raise awareness and understanding of Negro Leagues baseball in the area and honor local players and personalities.

All baseball fans are invited to attend. Click here to purchase discounted tickets for the ballgame, which begins at 6:30 p.m. as the Green Wave baseball team takes on the University of Texas at San Antonio. Check out the SABR booth on the main concourse where chapter members will be giving away 500 gameday posters (see below), along with Negro Leagues baseball cards, baseball books, Cracker Jacks, plus SABR membership forms and information.

The New Orleans-based Schott-Pelican Chapter was the recipient of a SABR Local Grant to help fund this event.

In Memoriam: Len Levin

Few research articles published by SABR over the past half-century were not improved by Len Levin’s eagle eyes. As the lead copy editor for countless projects since he joined SABR in 1977, he served as a proofreader for thousands of biographies, game stories, journal submissions, and book essays.

Levin, who died at the age of 95 on Monday, April 6, brought his real-world experience as a journalist and teacher to the baseball research community and made an outsized impact. He liked to say his job as an editor was to “make bad stories good and good stories better.” Working behind the scenes with first-time authors and award-winning veterans, he treated everyone with the same level of professionalism and respect — but he never failed to correct any mistakes he spotted along the way.

His name appeared on the cover of dozens of SABR Digital Library books as an associate editor. He read nearly every one of the Games Project’s first 5,000 stories before publication. He even wrote a handful of articles himself, although he preferred his more familiar role in the background. He also served two terms on SABR’s Board of Directors, organized many Southern New England chapter meetings and one national convention in his home of Rhode Island, and was recognized with SABR’s highest honor, the Bob Davids Award, in 1997.

One week left to apply for Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference scholarships

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school or college students to attend the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference on June 18-21, 2026, in Memphis, Tennessee. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee is also pleased to award $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors in its 18th annual Thomas R. Garrett Scholarship essay contest in 2026. Click here to learn more or to apply. The contest is open to high school seniors and carrying a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the end of their junior year. Students have to write a 1,200-word essay answering a question related to one of the Negro League figures who are the namesakes of the scholarships. Deadline to apply: April 15, 2026.

All SABR members are invited to join us for a Virtual Candidate Forum featuring candidates for the two Director’s seats and the Treasurer’s seat in the upcoming 2026 Board of Directions election. The forum will take place on Zoom from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, April 16.

Coming soon: SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. The All-Time Eras Teams project is an interactive opportunity for all SABR members to participate in, debate with one another, and learn more about the iconic players and figures from different eras.

Each of the six All-Time Eras Team ballots will be released throughout the baseball season, beginning with the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and Deadball Era (1901-1919) teams on April 17. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by our members.

All-Time Eras Team Membership Drive begins next week

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

Save the date: 2026 SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference

Save the date! The eighth annual SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference will be held virtually on October 9–11, 2026. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Registration information and a call for presentation abstracts will be available soon at SABR.org/women-in-baseball-conference.

This year’s conference — co-sponsored by SABR and the International Women’s Baseball Center and hosted by Rockford University — will be a virtual Zoom event that includes panel discussions, research presentations, and the presentation of the Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award.

Join us at Tulane University on April 25 for Salute to the Negro Leagues Day

The Schott-Pelican SABR Chapter, in conjunction with the Tulane University Athletic Department, will sponsor a Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at a Tulane baseball game on Saturday, April 25 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, Lousiana. The event will raise awareness and understanding of Negro Leagues baseball in the area and honor local players and personalities.

All baseball fans are invited to attend. Click here to purchase discounted tickets for the ballgame, which begins at 6:30 p.m. as the Green Wave baseball team takes on the University of Texas at San Antonio. Check out the SABR booth on the main concourse where chapter members will be giving away 500 gameday posters (see below), along with Negro Leagues baseball cards, baseball books, Cracker Jacks, plus SABR membership forms and information.

The New Orleans-based Schott-Pelican Chapter was the recipient of a SABR Local Grant to help fund this event.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Coming soon: SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. The All-Time Eras Teams project is an interactive opportunity for all SABR members to participate in, debate with one another, and learn more about the iconic players and figures from different eras.

Each of the six All-Time Eras Team ballots will be released throughout the baseball season, beginning with the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and Deadball Era (1901-1919) teams on April 17. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by our members.

All-Time Eras Team Membership Drive begins in April

Refer two new members to SABR between April 7 and May 13 to receive an exclusive baseball card set featuring players selected to our All-Time Eras Teams!

Save the date! The eighth annual SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference will be held virtually on October 9–11, 2026. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Registration information and a call for presentation abstracts will be available soon at SABR.org/women-in-baseball-conference.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Extra tickets can be purchased for Thursday’s Education Forum at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown, Thursday’s “meet and greet” reception at the Withers Collection Museum & Gallery (333 Beale Street), Friday’s Memphis Redbirds baseball game at AutoZone Park, or Saturday’s awards banquet at the SpringHill Suites. Deadline to submit new project proposals to SABR Editorial Board is April 1

SABR’s Editorial Board welcomes new project proposals from members to be considered for publication through the Digital Library, SABR.org, or any other multimedia formats. We strongly encourage new proposals that involve collaboration between SABR research committees and/or chapters, and web-based projects with an eye toward enhanced multimedia presentation.

SABR seeks to publish 2-4 web-based multimedia projects and 6-8 books per year. Book projects should be of a scope that can fit in a single volume, typically between 100,000 and 200,000 total words.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school or college students to attend the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference on June 18-21, 2026, in Memphis, Tennessee. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than April 17, 2026.

Deadline to submit new project proposals to SABR Editorial Board is April 1

SABR’s Editorial Board welcomes new project proposals from members to be considered for publication through the Digital Library, SABR.org, or any other multimedia formats. We strongly encourage new proposals that involve collaboration between SABR research committees and/or chapters, and web-based projects with an eye toward enhanced multimedia presentation.

SABR seeks to publish 2-4 web-based multimedia projects and 6-8 books per year. Book projects should be of a scope that can fit in a single volume, typically between 100,000 and 200,000 total words.

Call for nominations: 2026 SABR Board of Directors election

The SABR Nominating Committee is now seeking nominations for candidates for the 2026 Board of Directors elections. 

To be eligible for the Board of Directors, candidates must have been members of the Society for at least the preceding four years. Any candidate for the Vice President position must have at least one year of prior service on the Board during the preceding five-year period, per the by-laws; that requirement has been waived for the Treasurer position in this year’s election. The deadline for nominations is March 24, 2026.

The offices to be filled are:

• Treasurer (3-year term)
• Director (3-year term)
• Director (3-year term)

Gary Cieradkowski selected as winner of 2026 SABR Jefferson Burdick Award

Gary Cieradkowski was selected as the winner of the 2026 Jefferson Burdick Award, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the baseball card hobby, by SABR’s Baseball Cards Research Committee.

Cieradkowski is best known within the card industry for his Infinite Baseball Card Set, an ever-growing, independently produced collection of cards highlighting a mix of baseball outsiders, overlooked legends, and untold stories. He is also the author of The League of Outsider Baseball: An Illustrated History of Baseball’s Forgotten Heroes. His designs and illustrations can also be found at Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Wrigley Field, Ebbets Field Flannels, and the Federal League-themed Smoke Justis bar and restaurant in Northern Kentucky. He was the guest on SABRcast #150 with Rob Neyer in 2022.

Doug Fearing honored with SABR Analytics Conference Lifetime Achievement Award

Doug Fearing of Teamworks Intelligence was honored with the SABR Analytics Conference Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday, February 28 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Fearing is the Chief Data Officer at Teamworks Intelligence. He was also the co-founder and CEO of Zelus Analytics. Following Zelus’s acquisition by Teamworks in 2024, he now leads the expansion of its advanced analytics capabilities across the Teamworks operating system. He founded and led the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Baseball Research and Development team and he also worked with the Tampa Bay Rays as a Senior Advisor with their R&D team.

Kristen M. Stewart wins Dr. Mike Marshall Baseball Biomechanics Research Award

Kristen M. Stewart was announced as the winner of the Dr. Mike Marshall Baseball Biomechanics Research Award on Saturday, February 28 at the SABR Analytics Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

Stewart was honored for her presentation on “Individual Muscle Capacity to Generate Elbow Varus Moment during a Fastball Pitch.” She is a PhD candidate in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in biomechanics at the University of Texas at Austin.

Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 54

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

Robert Elias to receive SABR Seymour Medal at NINE Conference

Robert Elias, author of Dangerous Danny Gardella: Baseball’s Neglected Trailblazer for Today’s Millionaire Athletes, will receive his SABR Seymour Medal award during the 33rd annual NINE Spring Training Conference on Saturday, March 7 in Tempe, Arizona. The Dr. Harold and Dorothy Seymour Medal honors the best book of baseball history or biography published during the preceding calendar year.

SABR Board of Directors to host virtual Town Hall on March 12

SABR’s Board of Directors invites all members to join us for a virtual Town Hall meeting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

SABR CEO Scott Bush will provide an overview on new initiatives and other upcoming activities and events. Board President Dan Levitt will provide a strategic planning update. Board Vice President Allison Levin will provide an update on research committees and local chapters. Board Treasurer Pat Filippone will provide a financial update and introduce himself to the membership. Other members of the Board of Directors will also be available for questions afterward.

Levitt was appointed as President in November and will serve the rest of the term through 2027. Filippone was appointed in December to complete the rest of the Treasurer’s term, which concludes following the Annual Business Meeting in 2026.

Deadline to submit new project proposals to SABR Editorial Board is April 1

SABR’s Editorial Board welcomes new project proposals from members to be considered for publication through the Digital Library, SABR.org, or any other multimedia formats. We strongly encourage new proposals that involve collaboration between SABR research committees and/or chapters, and web-based projects with an eye toward enhanced multimedia presentation.

  Next deadline: April 1, 2026 (for publication in late 2027 or 2028)

SABR seeks to publish 2-4 web-based multimedia projects and 6-8 books per year. Book projects should be of a scope that can fit in a single volume, typically between 100,000 and 200,000 total words.

The 15th annual SABR Analytics Conference kicked off this weekend and will continue through Sunday, March 1. With an attendance of more than 800 combined in-person and virtual student registrants for this event at the Beus Center for Law and Society in Phoenix, Arizona, we’re bringing together the top minds in the baseball analytics community to discuss, debate, and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball.

2026 Diamond Dollars Case Competition winners announced

The 2026 Diamond Dollars Case Competition winners were announced Friday, February 27 during the SABR Analytics Conference.

The winning teams selected were from Rice University, Vanderbilt University, and Texas A&M University.

The Rice University team which was picked to deliver an encore presentation in front of the full SABR Analytics Conference on Saturday included Mark Cohen, Brady Detwiler, Brendan Lloyd, Andersen Pickard, and Saylor Robinson.

Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 54

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

Last call for papers: 2026 SABR Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee will host the 26th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference on June 18-21, 2026, in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to two days of research presentations and player/author panels, attendees will also enjoy special presentations connected to our theme of “Black Baseball in the Land of the Delta Blues” and the city of Memphis.

This interdisciplinary conference welcomes proposals for oral and poster presentations from all research fields. Previous presenters have included college faculty, public school teachers, graduate students, and independent scholars. Presentations may focus on any topic related to the theme, or other Black baseball topics.

Please email your proposal as a Word attachment to Dr. Leslie Heaphy before March 2, 2026.

In Memoriam: Bill Mazeroski

Almost every kid who has ever played baseball fantasizes coming up in the bottom of the ninth inning during the seventh game of the World Series and hitting a home run to win it. Only one person has ever accomplished this. It occurred on October 13, 1960, at 3:36 p.m. That was when Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski deposited New York Yankees pitcher Ralph Terry’s slider over the brick wall at Forbes Field to bring a World Series championship to Pittsburgh for the first time in 35 years. It was the most memorable moment of a career that led Maz to the Baseball Hall of Fame, although he was elected more for his brilliant fielding than his hitting.

Mazeroski died at the age of 89 on Friday, February 20. In seventeen seasons with the Pirates from 1956 to 1972, Mazeroski was a 10-time All-Star and eight-time recipient of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award. He holds the all-time record for most double plays turned by a second baseman (1,706) and ranks in the top 10 at the position in career putouts and assists, more than a half-century after his retirement.

Call for papers: 2026 SABR Northern New Jersey 19th Century Baseball Interdisciplinary Symposium

Save the date! SABR’s Nineteenth Century Research Committee will host the Northern New Jersey 19th Century Interdisciplinary Symposium as a special virtual event on Saturday, November 14, 2026. The focus of this symposium will be on the rich early baseball and related history of the region, which extends from the New York state border south through Monmouth and Mercer counties.

Registration for all SABR members will open around July 1 at SABR.org. The cost will be $15 per person. The one-day Zoom event will run from approximately 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern on November 14.  

• Call for presentations: SABR invites all members to submit an abstract for a virtual research presentation at the 2026 symposium. Each presentation will last for 25 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A, and a visual component (PowerPoint, etc.) is strongly recommended. A/V files are not due with the Abstract but about 30 days before the actual event. Abstracts should be between 250–400 words and must be on any topic of 19th century baseball pertaining to Northern New Jersey. Please send an email with a Word or PDF attachment to Peter Mancuso by March 5, 2026.

Last call to apply for SABR Research Grants

In 2026, SABR will award a total of $10,000 in support of up to two research projects through its SABR Research Grant initiative.

Research Grants are intended to support original scholarly work that aligns with our organization’s core mission: fostering the study, discussion, and understanding of all aspects of baseball. We invite proposals that deepen our knowledge of baseball from various disciplines, including (but not limited to) history and the broader humanities, analytics, data science, business, law, biomechanics, and kinesiology. Applications that support the completion of a lasting outcome, such as a peer-reviewed publication or public exhibit, are highly encouraged.

The deadline to apply is 8:00 p.m. Eastern on March 1, 2026. All researchers are welcome to apply.

SABR Board of Directors to host virtual Town Hall on March 12

SABR’s Board of Directors invites all members to join us for a virtual Town Hall meeting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

SABR CEO Scott Bush will provide an overview on new initiatives and other upcoming activities and events. Board President Dan Levitt will provide a strategic planning update. Board Vice President Allison Levin will provide an update on research committees and local chapters. Board Treasurer Pat Filippone will provide a financial update and introduce himself to the membership. Other members of the Board of Directors will also be available for questions afterward.

Levitt was appointed as President in November and will serve the rest of the term through 2027. Filippone was appointed in December to complete the rest of the Treasurer’s term, which concludes following the Annual Business Meeting in 2026.

Last call to apply for a 2026 SABR Local Grant

The SABR Local Grants program provides an opportunity for chapters, research committees, and chartered communities to apply for funding for their projects under SABR’s Four Pillars: Research, Scholarship, Preservation, and Future of the Game. Applications are now open for a 2026 SABR Local Grant at SABR.org/local-grants. Submissions will be accepted until February 20, 2026. 

All SABR chapters, chartered communities, and research committees are eligible to apply. Individual SABR members and non-SABR groups are not eligible, so if you have an individual idea for a program grant, please follow up with your local chapter leadership or appropriate research committee to discuss an application.

SABR 54: Last chance to submit research presentation abstracts

SABR invites all members to present their research findings to their colleagues attending SABR 54, the annual convention on July 29-August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. Oral presentations are expected to last 20 minutes, followed by a five minute question-and-answer period. Posters will be presented, with the author on-hand to discuss the work, during a poster session of 60 minutes and they will remain on display throughout the convention.

The submission deadline for SABR 54 abstracts is 11:59 p.m. PST on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

In addition, we seek volunteers who wish to participate in the blind review process (beginning in March) and/or on-site judging (at the convention in Cleveland.) Those volunteers are also requested to apply by sending an email to convention-presentations@sabr.org.

SABR members now have access to a newly designed and updated Research Resources portal at SABR.org. The new Research Resources area also offers a range of baseball guides, archives, and databases organized by subject matter — from Biographical Research to Minor Leagues to Statistics/Records. Find Research Resources by going directly to The Research Collection page or by using the “Research” dropdown menu at the top of any SABR.org page.

All SABR members have exclusive access to online resources to aid in your research and deepen the exploration of your baseball fandom, including the Historical Black Newspapers Collection and US Newspapers Collection through ProQuest; the Newspapers.com World Collection; and The Sporting News Archives through Paper of Record. Normally, access to these fantastic resources would cost over $250 annually, but they are included as a complimentary benefit of your SABR membership! Members also have special access to two large collections exclusively at SABR.org: the Weiss Baseball Questionnaires (nearly 100,000 self-completed surveys from baseball players between 1945 and 2005) and the MLB Team Employee Database (recently updated with 2025 MLB teams and Negro Leagues team employees.)

We have also rolled out a new promotional ad at SABR.org to help encourage other baseball fans to sign up for a monthly or annual membership. As a SABR member, you can click the gold Login now link in order to sign in and remove the pop-up for the rest of your browser session.

Member Benefit Spotlight: Finding and Registering for Events

As a SABR member, you have vast resources and benefits at your disposal. With so much information at your fingertips, we realize it can be overwhelming to absorb it all! To highlight key benefits, read on for this month’s SABR Member Benefit Spotlight, an email series that identifies and explains some of the most valuable features of your membership. We hope this allows you to take full advantage of all SABR has to offer.

This month’s issue shows you where to look for upcoming events and register in advance for both local and national meetings. Attending a SABR event is a great way to get involved with the organization, while taking advantage of your membership. Whether you’re looking for in-person or virtual meetings, there is a SABR event for you! SABR.org is a great place to start, and you can find all national and local meetings on our Events page.

Call for papers: 2026 SABR Northern New Jersey 19th Century Baseball Interdisciplinary Symposium

Save the date! SABR’s Nineteenth Century Research Committee will host the Northern New Jersey 19th Century Interdisciplinary Symposium as a special virtual event on Saturday, November 14, 2026. The focus of this symposium will be on the rich early baseball and related history of the region, which extends from the New York state border south through Monmouth and Mercer counties.

Registration for all SABR members will open around July 1 at SABR.org. The cost will be $15 per person. The one-day Zoom event will run from approximately 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern on November 14.  

• Call for presentations: SABR invites all members to submit an abstract for a virtual research presentation at the 2026 symposium. Each presentation will last for 25 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A, and a visual component (PowerPoint, etc.) is strongly recommended. A/V files are not due with the Abstract but about 30 days before the actual event. Abstracts should be between 250–400 words and must be on any topic of 19th century baseball pertaining to Northern New Jersey. Please send an email with a Word or PDF attachment to Peter Mancuso by March 5, 2026.

Registration is also open for the 17th annual SABR Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference, which will be held on April 24-25, 2026, at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. All baseball fans are welcome to register now for this special event.

Call for papers: 2026 SABR Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee will host the 26th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference on June 18-21, 2026, in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to two days of research presentations and player/author panels, attendees will also enjoy special presentations connected to our theme of “Black Baseball in the Land of the Delta Blues” and the city of Memphis.

This interdisciplinary conference welcomes proposals for oral and poster presentations from all research fields. Previous presenters have included college faculty, public school teachers, graduate students, and independent scholars. Presentations may focus on any topic related to the theme, or other Black baseball topics.

Please email your proposal as a Word attachment to Dr. Leslie Heaphy before March 2, 2026.

SABR Research Grants deadline approaching soon

In 2026, SABR will award a total of $10,000 in support of up to two research projects through its SABR Research Grant initiative.

Research Grants are intended to support original scholarly work that aligns with our organization’s core mission: fostering the study, discussion, and understanding of all aspects of baseball. We invite proposals that deepen our knowledge of baseball from various disciplines, including (but not limited to) history and the broader humanities, analytics, data science, business, law, biomechanics, and kinesiology. Applications that support the completion of a lasting outcome, such as a peer-reviewed publication or public exhibit, are highly encouraged.

The deadline to apply is 8:00 p.m. Eastern on March 1, 2026. All researchers are welcome to apply.

SABR Board of Directors to host virtual Town Hall on March 12

SABR’s Board of Directors invites all members to join us for a virtual Town Hall meeting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

SABR CEO Scott Bush will provide an overview on new initiatives and other upcoming activities and events. Board President Dan Levitt will provide a strategic planning update. Board Vice President Allison Levin will provide an update on research committees and local chapters. Board Treasurer Pat Filippone will provide a financial update and introduce himself to the membership. Other members of the Board of Directors will also be available for questions afterward.

Levitt was appointed as President in November and will serve the rest of the term through 2027. Filippone was appointed in December to complete the rest of the Treasurer’s term, which concludes following the Annual Business Meeting in 2026.
