Cleveland Baseball History bus tour sold out

The Cleveland Baseball History bus tour on Thursday, July 30 is now sold out! If you plan to attend SABR 54 and would like to be added to the wait list in case a seat opens up, please email events@sabr.org.

The behind-the-scenes bus tour at SABR 54 will explore Cleveland baseball’s history. The tour will include roundtrip bus transportation to: League Park, featuring on-field access, a visit to the Baseball Heritage Museum, and “Baseball Art as the Game’s Storyteller” art exhibit; Rocky Colavito statue with a guided talk from author Joe Gazzo; Ray Chapman gravesite at Lake View Cemetery with a guided talk from author Scott Longert.

SABR 54: Transportation Tips

Members of the host Jack Graney Cleveland Chapter have compiled a list of transportation tips to help visitors and convention attendees enjoy their stay in Cleveland. If you have any questions during your stay, please don’t hesitate to ask a friendly SABR 54 volunteer for assistance.

All-Time Eras: Voting begins next week for Segregation Era Team

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. The All-Time Eras Teams project is an interactive opportunity for all SABR members to participate in, debate with one another, and learn more about the iconic players and figures from different eras.

• Voting opens on Friday, May 29 for the Segregation Era team (1920-1946). Click here to view the full player list for the Segregation Era ballot. All current SABR members are eligible to vote. 

Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by our members. The Segregation Era team will be unveiled on Wednesday, June 24, along with a special presentation by Seth S. Tannenbaum of Manhattanville University. Early registration ends next week for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

The full schedule is now available online. The conference will be highlighted by a film screening of Black Diamonds, Blues City: Stories of the Memphis Red Sox; special presentations on Bob Boyd and J.B. Martin; many research presentations; a Memphis Redbirds game; and a “meet and greet” reception at the Withers Collection Museum & Gallery on Beale Street.

Call for papers: 2026 SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference

SABR and the International Women’s Baseball Center have announced a call for papers for the eighth annual SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference, scheduled as a virtual event for October 9–11, 2026. Registration information will be available soon at SABR.org/women-in-baseball-conference.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Batters Up: The Future is Now.” We welcome abstracts on all topics and time periods relating to women in all aspects of baseball, including research on history, sociological and economic impacts, and global developments; international growth of the game, MLB-sponsored girls baseball events, the first WPBL season, women in the front office, and more. Abstracts accepted for posters and/or oral presentations.

Please submit abstracts of approximately 200 words, along with contact information and a short biography, by July 6, 2026, to Leslie Heaphy.

Students, apply for a Fall 2026 internship with SABR

The Society for American Baseball Research is seeking student interns to work during the Fall 2026 semester from September 1-December 1. The remote internship is an educational opportunity that may count toward college credit, covering 15-20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. The internship will be for a fixed period of time and is designed to provide the intern with skills and training that may be applicable to working in a nonprofit research environment or in other research-based organizations.

All-Time Eras Teams announced for 19th Century Era and Deadball Era

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. On Wednesday, May 13, SABR revealed the first two teams in a special Zoom webinar, covering the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and the Deadball Era (1901-1919).

More than 650 SABR members cast a vote on these ballots. The top vote recipients at each position were selected for the first team. Click on a link below to view the players, managers, and executives selected, along with their SABR biographies and statistics from Baseball-Reference.com:

In Memoriam: James A. Riley

James Andrew Riley III, an expert on the history of baseball’s Negro Leagues and a former SABR Board President, died at the age of 86 on April 21. His landmark 1994 reference volume, The Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues has been recognized as one of the most comprehensive works chronicling the segregated era of Black baseball. He also collaborated with Hall of Famers Buck Leonard and Monte Irvin on their autobiographies, and wrote several other acclaimed books and numerous articles on the Negro Leagues. 

Riley, who joined SABR in 1979 and remained an active member for the next four decades, served on SABR’s Board of Directors from 1996 to 2001, including one term as Board President from 1999 to 2001. He was the Director of Research at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City from 1996 to 2001. He also was a recipient of the SABR Negro League Committee’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Robert Peterson Recognition Award, and a past president of the Central Florida Chapter. His friendship with Atlanta native James “Red” Moore, a former Negro Leagues first baseman, facilitated Red’s appearance at several Magnolia Chapter meetings in Georgia.

In addition to his wife Dorothy and sons Jubal and Josh, he is survived by four grandchildren, Andy, Mark, Graham, and Delaney. A private family service was held.

The Society for American Baseball Research is seeking student interns to work during the Fall 2026 semester from September 1-December 1. The remote internship is an educational opportunity that may count toward college credit, covering 15-20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. The internship will be for a fixed period of time and is designed to provide the intern with skills and training that may be applicable to working in a nonprofit research environment or in other research-based organizations.

2026 Henry Chadwick Award recipients announced

SABR is pleased to announce the 2026 recipients of the Henry Chadwick Award, established to honor the game’s great researchers — historians, statisticians, annalists, and archivists — for their invaluable contributions to making baseball the game that links America’s present with its past.

The 2026 recipients of the Henry Chadwick Award are:

• Brian Kenny, host and anchor at MLB Network and ESPN since 1997, bringing analytical insights to World Series coverage, All-Star Games, and the daily rhythms of baseball coverage on television. 
• Eugene Murdock, a prolific baseball researcher and past SABR Board President who left behind an essential baseball biography and several dozen interviews with old ballplayers.  
• Rob Ruck, a history professor at the University of Pittsburgh, who has been contributing to the research landscape with documentary films and books on topics ranging from Pittsburgh sports history to baseball in Latin America and the Negro Leagues.
• Allan Simpson, founder of Baseball America, which reintroduced minor league baseball coverage to thousands of fans in the early 1980s and initiated meaningful widespread reporting on college baseball.

The 17th annual SABR Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference was held on April 24-25, 2026, at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

The 2026 conference was highlighted by a keynote address from author Bruce Allardice, along with a panel discussion on the evolution of early playing fields with Irwin Chusid, Thomas Gilbert, Jonathan Popovich, and moderator Bill Ryczek; a 19th-century artifact session with Robert Mayer, Tom Shieber, and Jonathan Popovich; a Member Spotlight interview of Herm Krabbenhoft by Dave Newman; plus research presentations.

 Rep. Jamie Flick sponsors Pennsylvania House resolution to recognize Negro Leagues Day

SABR member Jamie Flick sponsored a resolution in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to commemorate Negro Leagues Day in Pennsylvania on Saturday, May 2. The resolution was approved on Monday, May 4 by an overwhelming majority in the House. Pennsylvania House Resolution 481 recognizes the contributions African American baseball players have made to the game and acknowledges the significant impact the Negro Leagues had on the Civil Rights Movement nationwide.

Flick, an avid baseball fan, belongs to the Williamsport chapter of SABR, which is named in part after George W. Stovey, one of the best Black pitchers of the 19th century who was barred from playing in the major leagues because of the color of his skin. Flick credited SABR members in the Williamsport, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia chapters, including Rock Hoffman and Frank Collins, for suggesting the idea of the resolution. He said he wants to ensure players like Stovey receive the recognition they were long denied.

Levin, Filippone, Brooks, Krall elected to SABR Board of Directors

SABR members have elected Allison Levin, Pat Filippone, Tyrone Brooks, and Katie Krall to the organization’s Board of Directors in the 2026 election.

Allison Levin was elected as SABR’s Board Vice President, receiving 714 of 725 first-preference votes.

Pat Filippone was elected as SABR’s Board Treasurer, receiving 725 of 731 first-preference votes.

Tyrone Brooks and Katie Krall were elected as SABR Directors. Brooks received 355 first-preference votes and was elected first in SABR’s simplified preferential voting system after 19 rounds of balloting. Krall received 246 first-preference votes and was elected second after voting preferences were transferred in 18 rounds of balloting. Both Directors will serve a three-year term through 2029.

Special thanks to Tellers Committee members Stephen Barnes, Dominique Lim, and Alex Marks for certifying the results on May 7 in a virtual meeting and to the Nominations Committee of Joanne Hulbert, Emily Hawks, and Louis Schiff for their help in preparing the candidate statements. SABR Member Benefit Spotlight: Vote now for All-Time Eras Teams

Voting is now open for SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams! Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will be able to vote for players across six different eras who make up an all-time elite team for that era. Help us celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876 by voting for your favorite players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. 

Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by SABR members like you.

• Voting is open through May 4 for the first two teams: the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and the Deadball Era (1901-1919); click here to cast your vote 

All current SABR members are eligible to vote. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era.

Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 54

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

Check out highlights from Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at Tulane University

The Schott-Pelican SABR Chapter, in conjunction with the Tulane University Athletic Department, sponsored a Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at a Tulane baseball game on Saturday, April 25 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, Lousiana. The event raised awareness and understanding of Negro Leagues baseball in the area and honor local players and personalities.

Children of former Negro Leagues pitcher Johnny Wright and owner/promoter Allen Page threw out the first pitches before the Green Wave baseball team took on the University of Texas at San Antonio. Profiles of Negro Leagues players were highlighted between innings on the stadium’s video board. The ballgame was preceded by a Schott-Pelican Chapter meeting at the Holiday Inn in Metairie, Louisiana. Bekhzodjon Rustamov and Lucy Lu of George Washington University gave a presentation about their research in developing an AI chatbot focused on baseball analytics. The New Orleans-based Schott-Pelican Chapter was the recipient of a SABR Local Grant to help fund this event.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026.

Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Students, apply for a Fall 2026 internship with SABR

The Society for American Baseball Research is seeking student interns to work during the Fall 2026 semester from September 1-December 1. The remote internship is an educational opportunity that may count toward college credit, covering 15-20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. The internship will be for a fixed period of time and is designed to provide the intern with skills and training that may be applicable to working in a nonprofit research environment or in other research-based organizations.

SABR Member Benefit Spotlight: Vote now for All-Time Eras Teams

Voting is now open for SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams! Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will be able to vote for players across six different eras who make up an all-time elite team for that era. Help us celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876 by voting for your favorite players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. 

Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by SABR members like you.

• Voting is now open for the first two teams: the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and the Deadball Era (1901-1919); click here to cast your vote 

All current SABR members are eligible to vote. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era.

Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Conference begins in Cooperstown

The 17th annual SABR Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference began today at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Programming runs through Saturday, April 25, and the event is now sold out.

The 2026 conference will be highlighted by a keynote address from author Bruce Allardice, along with a panel discussion on the evolution of early playing fields with Irwin Chusid, Thomas Gilbert, Jonathan Popovich, and moderator Bill Ryczek; a 19th-century artifact session with Robert Mayer, Gary Passamonte, and Jonathan Popovich; a Member Spotlight interview of Herm Krabbenhoft by Dave Newman; plus research presentations.

Join us at Tulane University on Saturday for Salute to the Negro Leagues Day

The Schott-Pelican SABR Chapter, in conjunction with the Tulane University Athletic Department, will sponsor a Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at a Tulane baseball game on Saturday, April 25 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, Lousiana. The event will raise awareness and understanding of Negro Leagues baseball in the area and honor local players and personalities.

All baseball fans are invited to attend. Click here to purchase discounted tickets for the ballgame, which begins at 6:30 p.m. as the Green Wave baseball team takes on the University of Texas at San Antonio. Check out the SABR booth on the main concourse where chapter members will be giving away 500 gameday posters (see below), along with Negro Leagues baseball cards, baseball books, Cracker Jacks, plus SABR membership forms and information.

The New Orleans-based Schott-Pelican Chapter was the recipient of a SABR Local Grant to help fund this event.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Students, apply for a Fall 2026 internship with SABR

The Society for American Baseball Research is seeking student interns to work during the Fall 2026 semester from September 1-December 1. The remote internship is an educational opportunity that may count toward college credit, covering 15-20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. The internship will be for a fixed period of time and is designed to provide the intern with skills and training that may be applicable to working in a nonprofit research environment or in other research-based organizations.

The Schott-Pelican SABR Chapter, in conjunction with the Tulane University Athletic Department, will sponsor a Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at a Tulane baseball game on Saturday, April 25 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, Lousiana. The event will raise awareness and understanding of Negro Leagues baseball in the area and honor local players and personalities.

All baseball fans are invited to attend. Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. SABR welcomes new chapter in Long Island, New York

SABR’s Board of Directors has approved the formation of a new regional chapter. The Long Island Ralph Kiner Chapter serves members in the Long Island area of New York; the chapter leader is Mark Rosenman.

Scott Kiner, son of the late Hall of Fame slugger and beloved New York Mets broadcaster, approved the chapter’s request to honor his father and has expressed interest in supporting the chapter.

SABR All-Time Eras Team: Membership Drive begins

Voting opens next week for SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. The All-Time Eras Teams project is an interactive opportunity for all SABR members to participate in, debate with one another, and learn more about the iconic players and figures from different eras.

Each of the six All-Time Eras Team ballots will be released throughout the baseball season, beginning with the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and Deadball Era (1901-1919) teams on Friday, April 17. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by our members.

In Memoriam: Len Levin

Few research articles published by SABR over the past half-century were not improved by Len Levin’s eagle eyes. As the lead copy editor for countless projects since he joined SABR in 1977, he served as a proofreader for thousands of biographies, game stories, journal submissions, and book essays.

Levin, who died at the age of 95 on Monday, April 6, brought his real-world experience as a journalist and teacher to the baseball research community and made an outsized impact. He liked to say his job as an editor was to “make bad stories good and good stories better.” Working behind the scenes with first-time authors and award-winning veterans, he treated everyone with the same level of professionalism and respect — but he never failed to correct any mistakes he spotted along the way.

His name appeared on the cover of dozens of SABR Digital Library books as an associate editor. He read nearly every one of the Games Project’s first 5,000 stories before publication. He even wrote a handful of articles himself, although he preferred his more familiar role in the background. He also served two terms on SABR’s Board of Directors, organized many Southern New England chapter meetings and one national convention in his home of Rhode Island, and was recognized with SABR’s highest honor, the Bob Davids Award, in 1997.

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school or college students to attend the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference on June 18-21, 2026, in Memphis, Tennessee. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee is also pleased to award $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors in its 18th annual Thomas R. Garrett Scholarship essay contest in 2026. Click here to learn more or to apply. The contest is open to high school seniors and carrying a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the end of their junior year. Students have to write a 1,200-word essay answering a question related to one of the Negro League figures who are the namesakes of the scholarships. Deadline to apply: April 15, 2026.

All SABR members are invited to join us for a Virtual Candidate Forum featuring candidates for the two Director’s seats and the Treasurer’s seat in the upcoming 2026 Board of Directions election. The forum will take place on Zoom from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, April 16.

Coming soon: SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. The All-Time Eras Teams project is an interactive opportunity for all SABR members to participate in, debate with one another, and learn more about the iconic players and figures from different eras.

Each of the six All-Time Eras Team ballots will be released throughout the baseball season, beginning with the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and Deadball Era (1901-1919) teams on April 17. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by our members.

All-Time Eras Team Membership Drive begins next week

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

Save the date: 2026 SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference

Save the date! The eighth annual SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference will be held virtually on October 9–11, 2026. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Registration information and a call for presentation abstracts will be available soon at SABR.org/women-in-baseball-conference.

This year’s conference — co-sponsored by SABR and the International Women’s Baseball Center and hosted by Rockford University — will be a virtual Zoom event that includes panel discussions, research presentations, and the presentation of the Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award.

Join us at Tulane University on April 25 for Salute to the Negro Leagues Day

The Schott-Pelican SABR Chapter, in conjunction with the Tulane University Athletic Department, will sponsor a Salute to the Negro Leagues Day at a Tulane baseball game on Saturday, April 25 at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, Lousiana. The event will raise awareness and understanding of Negro Leagues baseball in the area and honor local players and personalities.

All baseball fans are invited to attend. Click here to purchase discounted tickets for the ballgame, which begins at 6:30 p.m. as the Green Wave baseball team takes on the University of Texas at San Antonio. Check out the SABR booth on the main concourse where chapter members will be giving away 500 gameday posters (see below), along with Negro Leagues baseball cards, baseball books, Cracker Jacks, plus SABR membership forms and information.

The New Orleans-based Schott-Pelican Chapter was the recipient of a SABR Local Grant to help fund this event.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Coming soon: SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams

Throughout the 2026 season, SABR members will have a chance to vote on SABR’s All-Time Eras Teams as we celebrate the 150 years of baseball and American history since the founding of the National League in 1876. The All-Time Eras Teams project is an interactive opportunity for all SABR members to participate in, debate with one another, and learn more about the iconic players and figures from different eras.

Each of the six All-Time Eras Team ballots will be released throughout the baseball season, beginning with the 19th Century Era (1876-1900) and Deadball Era (1901-1919) teams on April 17. SABR members will be able to vote for players at every position on the diamond, as well as the top manager and executive from that era. Each ballot period will culminate with a virtual Zoom webinar which includes a presentation covering that era of American history prior to the unveiling of the team chosen by our members.

All-Time Eras Team Membership Drive begins in April

Refer two new members to SABR between April 7 and May 13 to receive an exclusive baseball card set featuring players selected to our All-Time Eras Teams!

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

Save the date! The eighth annual SABR/IWBC Women in Baseball Conference will be held virtually on October 9–11, 2026. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Registration information and a call for presentation abstracts will be available soon at SABR.org/women-in-baseball-conference.

This year’s conference — co-sponsored by SABR and the International Women’s Baseball Center and hosted by Rockford University — will be a virtual Zoom event that includes panel discussions, research presentations, and the presentation of the Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award.

Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Extra tickets can be purchased for Thursday’s Education Forum at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown, Thursday’s “meet and greet” reception at the Withers Collection Museum & Gallery (333 Beale Street), Friday’s Memphis Redbirds baseball game at AutoZone Park, or Saturday’s awards banquet at the SpringHill Suites. Deadline to submit new project proposals to SABR Editorial Board is April 1

SABR’s Editorial Board welcomes new project proposals from members to be considered for publication through the Digital Library, SABR.org, or any other multimedia formats. We strongly encourage new proposals that involve collaboration between SABR research committees and/or chapters, and web-based projects with an eye toward enhanced multimedia presentation.

SABR seeks to publish 2-4 web-based multimedia projects and 6-8 books per year. Book projects should be of a scope that can fit in a single volume, typically between 100,000 and 200,000 total words.

SABR’s 54th annual convention is scheduled for July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. SABR 54 will feature a Major League-sized speaker lineup we know you’ll love, alongside an invigorated social experience emphasizing SABR’s ability to unite all of us in baseball fellowship. Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 54

With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to 4 scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 54 on July 29–August 2, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250. All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Scott Carter at scarter@sabr.org no later than May 15, 2026.

In 2026, all SABR members will exclusively receive the Baseball Research Journal electronically twice a year. The Spring 2026 issue will be sent out in April. However, if you are interested in a paperback copy of BRJ for your personal library, we have rolled out a subscription option at a significantly discounted rate: $7 per issue for members, compared to $19.95 at retail.

The SABR Local Grants program provides an opportunity for chapters, research committees, and chartered communities to apply for funding for their projects under SABR’s Four Pillars: Research, Scholarship, Preservation, and Future of the Game. Early registration now open for 2026 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on June 18-21, 2026, at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown in Memphis, Tennessee. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full and single-day registration is available for a discounted rate before May 25, 2026. 

Hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Committee, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. Since 1998, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of Black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and an annual art contest.

• Register: Click here to register online for the 2026 Malloy Conference. Full registration is $195 before May 25, $210 afterward. Students: $75 before May 25, $85 afterward. Single-day registration is also available for $80 for Friday or Saturday before May 25; $90 afterward. Extra tickets can be purchased for Thursday’s Education Forum at the SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown, Thursday’s “meet and greet” reception at the Withers Collection Museum & Gallery (333 Beale Street), Friday’s Memphis Redbirds baseball game at AutoZone Park, or Saturday’s awards banquet at the SpringHill Suites. All of these sessions are included in the full registration package.

• High School Essay Contest: SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee is pleased to award $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors in its 18th annual Thomas R. Garrett Scholarship essay contest in 2026. Click here to learn more or to apply.
• Art Contest: The 17th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference Art Contest is open to all artists in 2026.
• Library Grants: SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee will award two $500 Dick Clark Memorial Library Grants for 2026. Click here to download a PDF application.

The 2026 winners of the McFarland-SABR Baseball Research Award, which honors the best articles on baseball history or biography completed or published during the preceding calendar year, are:

Deadline to submit new project proposals to SABR Editorial Board is April 1

SABR’s Editorial Board welcomes new project proposals from members to be considered for publication through the Digital Library, SABR.org, or any other multimedia formats. We strongly encourage new proposals that involve collaboration between SABR research committees and/or chapters, and web-based projects with an eye toward enhanced multimedia presentation.

  Next deadline: April 1, 2026 (for publication in late 2027 or 2028)

SABR seeks to publish 2-4 web-based multimedia projects and 6-8 books per year. Book projects should be of a scope that can fit in a single volume, typically between 100,000 and 200,000 total words.

Call for nominations: 2026 SABR Board of Directors election

The SABR Nominating Committee is now seeking nominations for candidates for the 2026 Board of Directors elections. 

To be eligible for the Board of Directors, candidates must have been members of the Society for at least the preceding four years. Any candidate for the Vice President position must have at least one year of prior service on the Board during the preceding five-year period, per the by-laws; that requirement has been waived for the Treasurer position in this year’s election. The deadline for nominations is March 24, 2026.

The offices to be filled are:

• Vice President (2-year term)
• Treasurer (3-year term)
• Director (3-year term)
• Director (3-year term)

Self-nominations are welcome. If you would like to nominate yourself or another candidate or suggest a question for the candidates, contact Nominating Committee chair Tara Krieger.

SABR’s publications team is seeking to expand our pool of peer reviewers for upcoming editions of the Baseball Research Journal. Are you a SABR member who has been published in the BRJ, The National Pastime, or a SABR book or website project? Would you like to read and give feedback on 1-4 papers per year?
